How to Actually Style Clothes You NEVER Wear

I used to stop myself from wearing my fancier clothes in my day to day since I didn’t want to attract attention to myself or look over dressed. But then I realized when I saw someone wearing something notable or styled I thought they were the coolest in the room. So like why can’t I also be the coolest in the room! Wear the fancy clothes!

For the longest time, I struggled with wearing dresses, because I wore jeans and graphic tees almost every day, and I felt like I didn't know how to wear them. But I wound up making my way over to the dresses by bridging the gap with wearing skirts with my usual tees (to get used to the feel) or wearing minidresses over jeans (in a very early 00s move). Now I wear my dresses much more often, with hardly a thought. Using the "comfort" items really helps!

Sometimes when I’m too precious about an item, I wear it in a low commitment situation. If it feels wrong to wear it for a 5 hour meeting with friends, I might just wear it for 20 minutes on a dog walk. The immediate goal is to just get myself out the door dressed in that item. Rinse and repeat until the preciousness goes away!

I discovered that saving 'special' or 'good' clothes just wastes them. When my mum died, the amount of nice shoes in boxes, and clothes with tags still on, were such a waste, so I've pulled my good clothes out, and put them in with the cycle of all my clothes, I probably don't wear them as often, but at least I'm wearing them! ... lessons learned.😢

To make your life easier, some washing tips from someone who worked high-ed retail for a long time!

- if it says 'hand wash', you can usually just wash it on a delicate cycle (low heat, no warmer than 30 celsius) with gentle detergent. There is specific detergent for fine fibers (it usually says 'fine wash' or 'wool and delicates'), get some of that. If it has trim/lace/delicate fluttery things, wash them in a washing bag. Those are mesh bags that close with a zipper or tie, and they keep the clothes contained so they can't get snagged. I also use these to wash underwear (on delicate, again). Hang them up to dry, and done! Wool items: lay flat to dry! (forgot to add that, thanks Karen Grohs!)
- If it's a silk blouse: same damn thing. delicate cycle, delicate detergent, washing bag, hang to dry. That's it.
- I divide laundry into temperature (how hot can I wash it) and color. Anything black/very dark goes together, anything very light goes together, midtone colors together by tone (blue/green/purple and pink/red/yellow).
- Stain on a white shirt? Don't try to rub at it, that makes it worse. Get some oxi-clean, it's powder that comes in a tub and you mix it with water. Soak the shirt in that mixture for a while, then rub the fabric together to get the stain out while it's in the oxi-clean. If that doesn't work, get green soap and use that to get it out.
- Oxi-clean can be used on a lot of white and light-colored clothes! To freshen up white clothes, mix the oxi clean in a bucket of warm water, then put in your white blouses and shirts to soak. leave for an hour or 2, then wash as usual. It gets the grime/weird cast out of white clothes.

You can wash basically anything yourself! Just be careful, look at the label to check what fiber it is, and keep colors/heat in mind. Also, NEVER tumble-dry anything that has elastic, elasthane, or other kind of stretch in it. The heat and movement breaks down the fiber, destroying it - you get those weird little strings. Just hang it up!

9:32 what i’ve found helpful if i feel awkward in an outfit or like it doesn’t look good on me is that i’ll look in a mirror but purposely in a way that cuts off my face and then imagine how i’d feel if i saw the fit on pinterest or something. so it might sound dumb, but seeing the outfit “not on yourself ” gives a new perspective on it! hope this helps or adds to the video at all 🤗

Learning some basic mending has helped me to not be as scared to wear my favorite clothes. Obviously the main benefit is clothes lasting longer in general, but I do feel like I'm less nervous to pull out nice pieces for day-to-day knowing that I can repair them if needed. (My repair skills are really not great right now, too, I imagine that getting better at mending will make me even more confident to wear the nice things! I'm working on learning visible mending right now to lean into the fact that none of my repairs are quite "unnoticeable" despite my best efforts haha)

Liz, videos like this are why I love your channel. We have very different styles and aesthetics, but your mentality on wear and repair makes every video a comforting, safe watch. I have struggled so much with my body image and my body changing due to illness, age, etc, and your neutral "just wear the clothes" point of view is so healing to me. Thank you.

For the air drying issue: get a cheap drying rack and leave it out in your bedroom (mine is permanently on my dresser)-- or get a wall-mounted drying rack if you don't have space. Once you have an easy tool to throw your air-dry only items onto, it becomes less of a chore

On altering, I have almost no sewing skill but I am short so I hem most things, I just found a YouTube video to learn how to hand sew and everything I do looks a mess from the inside but it looks fine from the outside and that is good enough for me. You really don’t need a lot of sewing skill to make some basic alterations!
