The manageress of the Jaeger shop in Carlisle gave me a great tip in the 80s. When a silk blouse is dry clean only, get it dry cleaned the first time. That will fix the dye; and you can wash it in water forever after

Regarding UGGs, when I moved to Australia I realized that Ugg actually came from Australia and most people wear them indoors. As an indoor slipper, they do a wonderful sturdy job of protecting feet from icy tile floors and actually last forever looking crisp and fresh. Wearing them in rain is misuse like putting all your clothes in the dryer.

Again as an Australian , where Ugg boots originated in the ‘70’s, I can tell you they were not meant to be outdoor shoes. They were meant to be worn as slippers. I’ve never seen an Australian wearing Ugg boots around the streets. Australian houses are really not built for cold weather and become like a fridge in winter so we need heavy duty warm footwear inside.

I may be one of you're older subscribers, and by that I mean older as in 62 years. Imagine the fabrics I've worn, purchased, and taken care of, so while I'm no expert at any of it, I know stuff (a favorite phrase of my husband's). So, here are a few things I've learned or discovered that work very well for me.
Wash clothes according to fabric type, mostly. I wash denim with denim unless it's lighter colored in which case I wash them with sweats because denim can't bully my sweats in the washer or dryer; cotton t-shirts with the same, and so on. The reasoning is that fabrics go through way less stress if washed with the same or very similar fabrics, and by doing this I've extended the lives of my clothes and our washer n dryer. Just about everything I launder goes into the dryer, however I never use high heat, either the delicate cycle is used or I use "manual settings" like 20 min on medium, then 30 on low for whatever's left. While changing the load out I layer 5 or 6 wool dryer balls while I toss stuff into the dryer.
I'm so sorry to have gone on and on, but maybe something I've figured out will help someone else, making it worth the read. I confess I have a lot more info I could have passed on here, but I felt it would be rude to do so.
Happy weekend all!

I've posted previously about an allergy to wool. Someone recommended alpaca. I tried it and can wear it without issue. I found a company called Paka. I have a 100% alpaca pull over that is gorgeous. Two alpaca/cotton blend t-shirts that I love. Thank you to whoever suggested alpaca!

I'm 90% natural fabrics these days. One material I WILL NEVER buy no matter, no convincing, is acrylic. It's straight up garbage. Love this video!

Plastic fabrics in the garment industry are the number one creator of microplastics (duh but I just learned) from dust, wash and wear. Our trash never goes away. Recycled plastic leggings? Microplastic particles everywhere. Fleece? Fiber shed, fuzzy sweater, etc…. After so much creativity in the fashion space with recycled plastic, I’m so disappointed by what I’m learning.

1)Any kind of outerwear (specifically peacoats) that are made from polyester but mimics the fuzziness of wool. It’s guaranteed to pill, is difficult to layer effectively in winter re: changing temperatures, and if you get the layering wrong, you are left with permanent stink.

2) Handbags that are designed to maintain their rigidity in such a way that they can’t relax/wear in. These are usually made from faux leather and suede, but an honourable mention goes to wicker or other plasticky substitutes.

3) Rhinestones and any kind of plastic appliqué. This might be a given, but it’s high time brooches make a comeback lol.

Not to mention that acrylic sweaters are quite literally suffocating - they don’t breathe at all, and you’ll end up super-sweaty (shout out to all my menopausal girlies)!

20:17 it's because they are NOT designed to withstand the elements! uggs are ski lodge shoes; you come in from skiing, take off your ski boots (notoriously uncomfortable) and put on your uggs. they are luxury, ski-bunny lodge slippers! not designed for outside whatsoever. then one person wore them out of context & called it style. [end rant]

the dryer thing is is real. My roommate and I got ourselves matching tshirts from a merch stand at a concert last year and while I religiously wash as cold as possible and avoid the dryer like a plague (I work in costuming, I jnow not to risk it) she tumbledries it at every wash and its really apparent. there's an all over print and hers is super faded - if i saw it whole thrifting I'd assumed that it was from YEARS of wear and tear - but it's only been a year.

Most of my "whites", cotton and linen tops, I wash by hand. This summer I began soaking old favourites, which had yellowed, in a solution of 1/4 cup baking soda & 1/4 cup white vinegar in a small basin of water. A small pan works well as long as the item is completely immersed in the solution, so, one item at a time..I found this really brightened them with less stress on the fibres. Thanks for your video, very informative and entertaining too!
