  During the 2000&apos;s, there was an indie mmorpg project and hundreds of us were waiting for any public release. A public alpha was released with a 100MB installer and it only took an hour for the host to get flooded with download requests. We were begging for the admins to use torrent. After a few hours, the lucky few that got in early finished their download and went to sign in but quickly realized the game server is hosting the installer. The game is unplayable until everybody finishes downloading. The players with complete downloads finally decided to throw up torrents and we all interrupted our downloads to switch over. After another hour, everybody was playing and most of us were seeding to keep it that way. If the community didn&apos;t switch to torrent, it would&apos;ve taken days for the server to stabilize enough for everybody to log in and play.

  Imagine the mountains of cash used to raid and arrest people that kept building a better internet..<br>Imagine it was used to reflect on why actually people do it and find a solution. Charge greedy studios and companies, and even earn money from system that is supposed to make the world better, not worse.

  Meanwhile the legislatures around the world pass bills that wants to de-anonymize the web. &nbsp;They&apos;re doing it under the guise of age verification and Illinois is already a lost cause right now.

  I&apos;ll never forget how Windows 7 Beta and RC downloads completely crashed Microsoft&apos;s entire FTP server infrastructure. <br>They refused to use BitTorrent because it was &quot;pirate technology&quot;.<br><br>Thankfully, they grew up.
