If someone could hand this video to my CEO the next time they think "maybe we could do more layoffs" that'd be very helpful, thank you.

What about bowling pin setters?
That used to be a job done by humans, and now it's fully automated

I'm remember when we had to call an operator to make a long distance call.

As a Pilot I will tell you this not exactly the case. We did make a job redundant and it wasn’t the airline pilot, it was the flight engineer. Monitoring of engines and systems, navigation and en-route information was the preview of the flight engineer. Then Flight Management Computers took that job and pilots became the keepers of the instruments. With General Aviation jobs all over the world being in short supply there is less pilot’s able to pass through the pipe line due to lack of hours. This means that airline pilots are in short supply and there is no way to get people experience short of paying for their hours. I can very easily see many domestic flights going one pilot with remote or AI technology. Not good for me personally but drones have replaced a lot of the small jobs that pilots used to have in order to create hours/experience.

I went to the bank yesterday. There is only ever one single teller now, standing in a row with eleven empty service windows beside them. There are several working ATMs outside. When I go to the grocer, there is between zero and one open checkout lanes, with many empty lanes. There's ten automated kiosks though. So I find the opening argument to be silly.

Spreadsheets didn't just impact accounting, but engineering.

I was working in the nuclear industry in the early '80's for one of the power plant design companies. One of the things the group I worked in did was to calculate the radioactive isotope inventory for various components, in various scenarios. This included what would be put into containment for various accident scenarios.

We had programs to do that calculation, but due to the limits of computers back then, the calculations for the accident scenarios were limited to specific time slices: Immediate, 1 hour, 10 hours, 100 hours, etc.

The inventory of any given radionuclide was assumed to remain constant between any given time slice.

This was inaccurate, since, depending on the decay rate for any given radionuclide, it could "disappear" between any one of those time slices.

Tweaking the program we used to change the time slices was not a simple operation due to the nature of the code.

When our department, yes department, got it's first PC, I created a spreadsheet in Lotus123 to do these calculations.

I set up a row, where one column had the decay rate, and subsequent columns had the decay calculation for a time interval that was a variable from another cell.

I copied that across multiple columns, and when I had the row set up, copies the whole row down the rest of the table.

I then went in and updated each row for the appropriate decay rate for any given radionuclide, and I now had a spread sheet that could do the calculation for any time itnerval of interest by simply changing the value in the appropriate cell.

It's not about job security for most people; it's about financial security. Most people are intelligent and complex enough to figure out what to do with their time to make them happy as long as they have financial security.

I have worked at construction sites where the controls for the elevator weren't finished yet, so they have someone manning the elevator, but they wouldn't be written down as being an elevator operator, they're called a hoist operator. Usually an elevator is inside the building while a hoist is on the outside, but they're effectively the same job, and people who train for one are qualified to do the other. Unlike normal elevators, hoists aren't automated.

Genuine question: Yes, it seems to create jobs, but in what cases does it create better paid jobs vs. lower wage jobs?
