Most jobs are not borderline steeling your life away, they are subtle, slow and complete torture of a human soul. What a horrifying way to live, barely scraping by. Being out there among the NPC psycho workforce is fucking hollow. Everywhere you turn, it's dehumanizing insults to one's being.

This is a classic 'hold the line open from the calling end' trick. The caller calls (in this case) the answering machine but doesn't hang up, thus leaving the line open. This means the caller can play fake dial tone to the target phone; listen to what is being dialied; put itself as a man-in-the.middle for intercepting phone calls.
