  The world is a lot older than people realize. There are many tunnels deep under New York City, California, etc. that aren’t on any maps of anybody that you and I will know. Rest assured the government knows. I also think a lot of people don’t speak up because if they do, they lose their job. Employers don’t want you seeing hearing or asking anything that is outside your precise job or pay grade. GREAT story btw. Keep them coming ❤

  I am a wastewater worker, and the people that I have met in this industry are some of the smartest people I have ever met. They’re also some of the funniest and kindest people I’ve ever met also.

  Years ago, I worked at a small college that had a serious sewer blockage....it was years of accumulated cooking grease! After that, grease traps were installed... that's another job that you gotta have some respect for....The people who clean out those grease traps...

  PLEASE do more sewer tunnel and underground worker stories!!! These are my favorites, plus the “pale crawler” type things have been seen underground in many places. I remember as a kid when me and my friend were exploring a drainage tunnel, and we were crawling on our hands and knees. We crossed at least on manhole tunnel where we could stand up, but the horizontal tunnels were just big enough for two smaller statured kids could crawl through. We carried flashlights and candles (we reasoned if the oxygen gets thin the flame will dim or go out and we’d know to get out, also I thought that underground methane and other gases would make the flame change color and or flare up-) we carried bottle rockets also to “clear out” the portions ahead- if wild animals or whatever were down there the rockets exploding and streaking past would most likely chase them away. We took breaks to sit and give our knees a break. When we started crawling again we started hearing muffled sounds of splashes (there was a few inches of water in the bottom of the tunnel, an occasional dead animal that crawled in to die or etc.) the splashes were ahead of us but our flashlights and torches weren’t bright enough. (BTW we also carried torches to clear out the massive cobwebs and spiders hanging across the tunnel especially near the openings) Again we stopped, and a couple more splashes were heard. Now we froze, because there’s something ahead, and we were 15-16 so I said something about “what if it’s a zombie crawling towards us?” Which immediately chilled us to the core, no the tunnels weren’t big enough for anyone to stand up in the in between sections but animals could crawl through easily as well as a person. The splashes would stop whenever we stopped, which wasn’t right, whatever it was, it’s actively trying to keep from being seen. We shot several exploding bottle rockets at the noises and listened carefully, not hearing much except splashes getting farther away from us. The air was so thick with smoke from the rockets that we certainly couldn’t see anything past a dozen feet. Shortly afterwards we predictably ignited a methane pocket and the explosion burned us severely. We crawled up the nearest manhole and shot out of it, that heavy cover was flipped over so fast by my friend shooting up that ladder. We spent some time recovering (my friend was in the burn unit for weeks, but I wasn’t really burned as bad. Whatever it was, we never found out. Years later the opening to the tunnel was barred. The tunnels run under a good deal of the area, but they’re not “sewers”
