I was a mechanic for 13 years. Left when I found out that the guy they hired that was 10 years younger than me was getting paid 8 dollars more. I have them the chance to match and they said no.

I quit because useless people around me were making double the money for staring into the distance with their mouth open and drool coming out.

most automotive companies should look at their HR teams to find where they are losing money. Not appreciating techs is just crazy.

Not even a professional mechanic, just work on my own cars, and you will not believe the positions that I have had to twist my body to for some repairs. Doing that everyday would definitely have me paralyzed before retirement

    "We need mechanics!!! "
You actually only hire the guy with four years of specialized learning and 6 years of infield experience. No training availability.

I’m a diesel mechanic (off road) I challenge you to find one thing. Just one that doesn’t touch diesel. The dirt under your house was pushed around with a dozer, the concrete that was poured was moved by a diesel powered cement truck. We’re not going into building materials as you know they were moved on a 18 wheeler. The groceries in your fridge/cabnets? Yeah from seed to harvest and to the grocery store diesel was involved. The price of gas sucks but look at the price of diesel when you wonder why everything is so damned expensive.

I worked in a shop for 2 years, as a "dual tech" at 18. They were teaching me how to wrench.

Literally every guy was telling me, "find a different career, your body won't last"

And i ended up getting fired when i was standing around for a few weeks, after new shop management.

Wanna know why i was standing around? I was making $9 an hour, while the certified guys making flat rate were stealing oil changes and tire rotations from me to pad their dwindling work.

Thanks Subaru, for waiting to fire me until Friday at 5pm after i cleaned the shop.

I love how old guys act all confused. "nobody wants to work anymore" BECAUSE NOTHING PAYS ENOUGH.

Aviation mechanic here. I left the profession because airlines in my country still use the COVID-19 pandemic as an excuse for not paying decent wages. They want to pay the equivalent of my country's minimum wage, which isn't even enough to live on—about $400 USD per month.

A good number of issues you didn't touch on and may not be aware of. I am one of those certified mechanics with roughly 10 years in this industry. So working in dealerships brings a huge issue with warranty work. They have us fix manufacturer mistakes and drop the labor times by atleast half if not more. So if I was replacing spark plugs and that paid 2 hours they would pay for warranty 1 hour sometimes less. They add more paper work for us while lowering our pay time for that. Independent shops have a huge issue with what is called back flagging. So a brake job may pay 2 hours for new pads and to turn rotors. But if the customer comes back 4 months later saying something like when I back up first thing in the morning I hear a squeak. The shop will then warranty out the parts and back flag the technician the hours making him replace parts for free or take the time from future work the tech will do. Lots of shops Independent or dealer will say they charge for a diagnostic fee which is supposed to pay techs 1hr. But if the customer buys parts they will get rid of the diagnostic fee for the customer or coop but why does that mean you also no longer need to pay me the time for the diagnostic. Shops will regularly take away the hour diag time from techs. I have been asked to do free work by managers in the shop and had them get mad that I say I won't work for free. We have to have hvac licenses I have my 609 I am going to be getting my 608 Universal because of upcoming refrigerents planned for usage. Customers are some of the most ridiculous acting people k have delt with and I have worked in private security. This is just a small portion of the problems in this industry that you didn't touch on.
