  There is NOT a mechanic shortage. There is a shortage of people willing to work for the scraps dealerships think is a fair salary. Flat rate is a rip off.

  I was a mechanic for 5 years ... I absolutely HATE cars made in roughly the past 10 years.... So many special tools, extremely tight engine bays etc, buy a 90s-early 2000s vehicle if you want reliability

  Mechanic here, we don't get anything from the insane price increases on vehicles and service in fact they are reducing the maximum amount we can earn from flat rate by capping the maximum amount of money we can get from raises. Side work is beneficial for both the mechanic and customer because the customer gets a better and honest price while the mechanic gets 100% of the profits. Make friends with good mechanics and you can honestly save a ton of money by not getting screwed by dealerships.

  I work as a tech for a chain comp and do big jobs on the side for WAYYY cheaper the crazy part is that techs only make about 5-10% of what they make the shop

  "Safer" It's just an arms race to see who can make the bigger tank to take out smaller, cheaper cars.

  The old logic of I am putting more in than it's worth doesn't apply anymore. Now you have to consider the 800 to 1200 a month a paid off car isn't costing you.

  last repair bill was $400 charged by Acura in 2010 for a cabin air filter.... it was my now wife's car and i didn't know much about repairs.... though i l loved cars. I researched how much the filter was and boom $4.... then a mechanic friend of mine showed me  how to install it... my mind was BLOWN.... i decided that day, if it's broken, I'LL TRY TO FIX IT, if i can't, then hell it's still broken... haven't been to the mechanic ever since, and with youtube coming along shortly after, i've learned everything down to engine rebuild (done it 4 times now).

  I'm an advisor in a small dealership, we steer people away from things that would not be good for them. People will put 3k in timing chains in an equinox that the cat is still throwing a check engine light and we told them years ago that they needed pistons for the oil burning. I advised against it. It's a choice. I feel my job is advising people what would be the best option, not my most profitable one.

  You can absolutely work on new cars, just be ready to spend two days on removing the entire dash just to replace a leaking heater core seal, then spend another day putting it all back together. Its doable yourself, just pain and agony
