I didn't want to make games until I was 21.
what did I want before ? nothing, like a complete empty shell that just float and let the wave bring me somewhere...until I got stuck hard and wake up to see the mess in my life.
I basically relearn everything and slowly fixing my messy life.
Life fly by so fast, yet it feels so slow.
My only advice to everyone is to learn about yourself.
I wish I knew this when I was old enough to understand things but young enough that I can still make many mistakes.
When you're older, mistakes seem to be more lethal.
But at the end of the day, you wouldn't learn anything if you don't make any mistake.

As a part time developer, I can't say it's just a motivation problem. While motivation is a component, sometimes it really is a matter of time. I've skipped development slots myself because I just wasn't feeling it at the time, but sometimes there is no getting around needing a lot of time to accomplish something (like modeling a character).

I totally agree with keeping the scope small. Even a small scope will require a LOT of time. Keeping the scope small allows for more time to improve the assets. The downside, however, is that you have to face the decision to release more quickly. Of everything I do to make a game, deciding that it's done is one of the hardest part. Feature creep is a powerful enemy. For me, starting is the easy part. I can start a new project at the drop of a pin. Finishing is the obstacle.

Great video! I’m originally a musician/sound designer. I also recently graduated as a 3D artist and have wanted to make games for years. What’s been stopping me is the coding. I’ve recently started learning gdscript and I’m having a hard time but I don’t want to give up even though I’ve tried learning python, ruby, processing and CSound in the past and couldn’t keep up.

Great video. I have a family and a dog. For me, I just make sure I attempt at least one thing each day and normally in the morning before work, or at lunch, if I am working from home.

I have a Google tasks list with the stuff I have to make and do passes on the stuff I have made.
L1 (blocked out) L2 (Working needing final refinement) and L3 (Shippable).

To elaborate. I set each thing up, get it working, make notes for future refinement and move on to the next thing.

I am glad I am not the only one with started, but unfinished projects!
Thank you for the advice!

I have two huskies.
Walking them takes a lot of time of the day, but what you say is true.

When I got them I thought they would get in the way of the things I needed to do, but actually it was the opposite, I get things done, so I can enjoy my time with my dogs.

Fantastic video, I’m working full time and trying to transfer gradually into being able to do gamedev full time as well, but I know it won’t be easy or happen quickly. As far as time management goes, I highly recommend DevDuck’s videos to anyone and everyone interested in game development. I don’t know how he manages to balance things like he does, it’s damn near superhuman, but he manages to work full time, do game dev (and YouTube) relatively close to full time, and still manage to handle family time, exercise and taking care of his physical and mental health, and more. It’s so important to not let those things fall by the wayside, because if you aren’t feeling your best, you can’t operate at your best.

2:33 I couldn't agree more. I may not do game dev, but slotting out time is very important motivation. I wanted to get in shape a bit and so instead of spending the 30 minutes waking up for work watching videos, I do some minor yoga and strength exercises. It is amazing.
