Fun fact about celeste for Pico 8; it's actually the original, released in 2016! The console and steam releases didn't come out till later in 2018.

dude, this channel is just what i needed. No boring, non-engaging "blah blah here's how make game" but legitimate, engaging content that leaves me feeling excited to push deeper and work harder on my own projects. Enticing the mind into educating itself truly is the key to growth. Also your "flappy bird" twist was iconic.

Great video! That's kinda cool to hear my little PICO-8 book is being used for what sounds like such a cool class! Thanks for the kind words about it. :) It looks like you had a wonderful adventure learning how to make small games. Love the channel, btw.

I love tiny consoles because they really push you to focus on a fundamental core concept, avoid overcomplicating, and just get a thing done. You can always expand the concept further in a fancier environment if you really want to.

I'm a 34 year old IT project manager, bored of corporate life, and just wanting to do what I've always dreamed of, developing my own games. Thanks for the inspiration on how to start this hobby :)

WOW! I helped publish a REAL 8-bit disk magazine called Loadstar for the Commodore 64. And the fun we had was exactly what you described in your world. We had two languages: Commodore BASIC 2.0 and 6502 Assembly. So we had to make it work in BASIC, then make it fast in Assembly/Machine Language. Loadstar published these games along with tutorials and helpful modules. We had 65536 bytes of memory and 1 million cycles per second - and these were factors when designing a game.

But we had just the sort of fun and community you are talking about. Just for reference, the C64 debuted in 1982. My first program was published in 1993 (just before Commodore Business Machines discontinued the C64 and subsequently went bankrupt). I took over the magazine in 2001, and we finished in 2017 with issue 250. Yours in a wonderful continuation of gaming, where imagination on the part of the programmer and the player is required.

Thanks for the video.

Am I game developer? No. Do I plan on becoming one? No. Do I love and appreciate all of this information? Absolutely.

As a massive shoot em up fan, that bee game looks actually really cool!

Shmups don't generally have limited ammo like you said, they generally let you shoot infinitely and you're supposed to focus more on the micro-spacing, so the fact you intuitively captured that specific gameplay aesthetic in such an original way without having played a game in the genre before is fascinating. Would love to play an expanded version of that someday, or even the simpler version you already have.
