  Trick: Be extremely strict to the class when talking to everyone then when it is one on one, be extremely kind, warm and understanding. Your kids will love AND respect you. Works like magic.

  I tell my students that I&apos;m not nice and I&apos;m not mean, but I&apos;m always fair. If that feels like I&apos;m nice or mean depends on their own behavior and our classroom agreements, not me. Always works.

  Here is how to conduct a classroom: <br>1. set norms<br>2. set expectations<br>3. The answer is always no for the first 6 weeks <br>4. involve parents early<br>5. lunch detention <br>6. always keep your promises<br>7. Redirect once then consequence<br>8. ignore secondary behavior unless it escalates to harm <br>9. never change your voice tone<br>10. Dont make or take it personal (dont become emotionally involved) <br>11. Stick to the policy<br>12. Always remain consistent <br>13. Follow the IEP or 504 to the letter and document EVERYTHING<br><br>This creates accountability and equity and tells your students you dont have favorites and you dont play.

  But a management plan works ONLY if the whole school backs you up, when consequences are mitigated or nullified by the power of families coaches and school administrators, teacher HAVE TO be nice, there&apos;s no other way.

  I love this because you are saying almost everything opposite of the traditional behavioral specialist. Those people come into the classroom giving techniques THAT DO NOT WORK! I’ve even seen suggestions from those people make everything in the classroom worst. And on top of that, they blame the teacher and make the teacher feel inadequate.

  I&apos;m 35 and Dutch, but I was a very troubled kid in highschool and the only teachers I listened, liked and respected were the nice ones or at least they did half of those things. I sat in a class with a lot of kids who behaved really bad. We even didn&apos;t have a teacher at one point for a curtain class, because not a single teacher wanted to teach my class. What I saw with my fellow classmates was that you need to be a bit in between for most kids. With the teachers who didn&apos;t say anything ever, while kids misbehaving or the ones who where very strict nobody cared about the learning or the teacher. The strict ones were hated and seen as dictators and the very nice ones were liked, but seen as pushovers. The teachers who got the most respect and got listened to the best were the ones who did make a lot a jokes and let you fool around for a bit, but when it got out of control they where firm. Because we knew that it was a very nice person and let us fool around we liked them, but we knew that when they did say something we went too far. I think the pulling aside and judging is important to do for some kids. I think for kids like me who had a lot mental health problems and an unstable living environment we needed to be pulled aside sometimes to have a talk about or get help with the real problems. For the kids who didn&apos;t have those problems it worked better when you just said something firmly in class at the moment they misbehaved.

  Thank you for finally saying it. I am so tired of people thinking that teachers are supposed to simply be “nice”
