  They do test. I dig deep into myself, and my purpose. My purpose is to support and defend students who want to learn. I&apos;m a defender, not a natural leader, but this gives me power. I directly tell a misbehaving student, calmly, with direct eye contact that I will not support anyone who prevents my students from learning in my class. This makes young ones think: do they want to be with me and the gang on the journey?

  It took me over 15 minutes to get one of my classes to pay attention to me. &nbsp;I didn&apos;t yell, I did three classes to attention. Even after I did get their attention I was only able to get out maybe 5 before they started again. &nbsp;I finally just walked over to give small group instructions to the quiet groups. In another class, they are so loud I can&apos;t even think. 36 students in that class. &nbsp;The first is like 31 but half are behavior problems. A student even told me he doesn&apos;t give a $#!+ if I call home. &nbsp;I&apos;m so tired, we are only three weeks in.

  If your class does not behave, then either you are not writing them up or admin is not carrying out their job. &nbsp;Misbehavior is on the kids, not the teacher.

  I like this approach, and also it can’t be overstated how much of a lonely island it makes you. In most middle schools, you could summarize the behavior management approach as AANASAT = “angry adults nagging and snapping at children.” The most admired teachers are the ones who can snap and shame the hardest. Momentary control, yes, and impressive power. But what a toxic socio-emotional environment! Plus, the name-and-shame approach is…um…not improving outcomes.
