They made a TV series of this movie that only (criminally) lasted one season. It was quirky and fun with great storytelling and a fantastic cast.

He's not still on it at the end because he can permanently retain it after perfecting the drug for himself.

I have honestly no idea why, but one line in this movie has stuck in my brain forever, I've had a rough go this last decade but any time I get a slight win, or a stress relieved I hear "And suddenly...it was all still possible", Could not remotely understand why this is the movie line that crosses my mind most

The thing with him missing the payments for the loan was because he had his black out and missed the appointment. The loan shark says something along the lines of "i said meet at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeJt6O0XLP0&t=720">12:00</a>".

I like to think him speaking "mandarin" at the end was like Its Always Sunny, where Charlie just believes he is super smart and can speak mandarin but its just gibberish.

He altered the pill to wean himself off while retaining it's effects. He permanently upgraded himself.

In that last confrontation he told Van Loon that once you know what's in it, you can tweak it. I think he found a way to make the effect permanent and then got off the drug entirely.

By the end of the movie he has weaned himself off the drug and retains all the abilities permanently.

There was a short-lived TV series that continued the movie. It started out as standard police procedural. But as it went, it got better and better. Another character was taking the drug, But Bradley Cooper, who produced the series, showed up in an episode as the same character he plays in the film.
