  “portable” used to mean ‘can be comfortably pocketed’ but nowadays it just seems to mean ‘could be carried in hand, if you like carrying large, sharp cornered electronics’

  I own the Yamaha. It has RCA connectors, which I appreciate because these are the cables I use with my ARCAM amplifier. Before that, I owned the ADCOM GCD 575, which I used for two decades, and then a TEAC that became unreliable after only two years, as it would stop randomly. With the Yamaha, you get good sound quality (which should be a major factor in any ranking), traditional connectors, and straightforward controls. Now that I am in my fifties, I have no interest in a long list of functions that never get used in a CD player.

  I feel to lucky to still have my childhood Philips personal cd player (AX2400/00). Which actually does not sound good. But I have memories of taking it everywhere while riding my bicycle and listening to my favorite CD&apos;s. Memories which can&apos;t be recreated again.

  I still have my Sharp which I bought for $89 in 1985. Still sounds great.

  I&apos;m currently in the process of building a vintage (90s) JVC rack (LOVE that amber!). I bought a couple of cd players from that era for stupid cheap and am VERY impressed with the outcome. I would love a 90s vs today battle. Receivers, cd players, etc!
