  Interviewer comments that it seemed Nick was carrying some guilt about Syd. Think so? They wrote an entire album about it!

  I can&apos;t believe that none of these people have actually reflected on how a tragedy like Syd’s affected the rest of their lives, especially when it is so obvious to outsiders. They might not have recognized it back then, but to have never processed it later—perhaps even with the help of a therapist—makes their lives seem completely unexamined, in the way Socrates thought not worth living.<br><br>Unless, of course, none of them want to share their true views for fear of being contradicted by the others. There have been so many lies and half-truths around this issue that someone with an inch of integrity should have called them out by now. <br><br>This is particularly true of Syd’s family, who kept insisting he was fine and enjoying his painting, even though accounts from his neighbors completely contradict that.His family was probably the most destructive and cruel influence on his suffering. His sister claimed the family tradition leaned toward classical music, acting like old-fashioned, middle-class country pumpkins who were more obsessed with keeping up appearances than mitigating the suffering of a poor soul. It wasn&apos;t as if they lacked the funds to place him in a decent, enlightened establishment in Zurich, surrounded by peers and cared for by trained professionals who knew how to ease his pain. <br><br>This is the other English way, isn&apos;t it? Just ignore it until it gives up hope and dies of drug induced diabetes.<br><br>The first step would have been to take him &nbsp;away from his childhood environment—an environment Syd clearly felt differently about than his older siblings did.<br><br>I don&apos;t believe Roger&apos;s accounts either. There seems to have been a sense of letdown on both sides, and as usual, Roger never grew out of it or showed real empathy. He is still upset by the &quot;Have You Got It yet?&quot; prank that Syd played on him. Roger took it as an insult to his intelligence and refused to play guitar with him. How petty is that? Couldn&apos;t he see that his friend was suffering, and that the joke was a cry for help? <br><br>It had nothing to do with Roger&apos;s narcissistic megalomania, which stems from grieving his mother&apos;s grief over a lost husband never been given a chance to see the tragedy of his own life. <br><br>Children don&apos;t miss what they never had. It is all the result of his mother&apos;s projections, which created a wall around him and prevented him from developing his own politics. For all his brilliance, he has got it all wrong.<br><br>And where has David endedup? With a lead role in cage having to make music to his wife&apos;s lyrics which I am sure he know is nothing compared to those of Rogers. The only good sone is the remake of Between Two Points. The lyrics of the rest are just chains around his neck.

  Thank you for posting this! Nick is so laid back and mellow. Two-years ago I saw him at a very small 1000 seat arena performing Piper with his band. Between pieces, he&apos;d quite openly talk about Syd and the old days. Much more candid than he appears in this, for sure. cheers.

  People often forget that in 2001, Live8 and the brief thaw it represented- was still four years away. At that point, Pink Floyd felt like a closed chapter. The band wasn’t giving interviews, Roger and David weren’t speaking to each other, and despite David, Nick, and Rick generally getting along, there was little public dialogue. And unlike today, there wasn’t the constant stream of online information shaping perceptions. <br>So while some have criticized the questions asked here or Nick’s demeanour, it’s worth remembering how unusual and valuable this material was at the time. We’re now accustomed to artists “opening up” on demand, but that wasn’t the norm back then. <br>This interview took place 25 years ago, which was 25 years after Floyd released Wish You Were Here, a reminder of the historical distance involved. Back then, everyone else might have been talking about Floyd, Syd, and the mythology, but the band members themselves largely weren’t. It was around this era that the idea of “heritage bands” and carefully curated, sepia-toned documentaries began to take shape, making this interview a fascinating snapshot of that transition.<br>Having said all that, it does seem that Nick is quite difficult here. Quite closed, a la Mike Rutherford. I might be reading that wrong of course!
