  I’ve said it before and I’ll repeat it here, YouTube channels like this are so invaluable, this sort of story tends if you’re lucky to get a paragraph in a book about the larger battle, having someone go deep into the story and the give the participants their moment, making their sacrifice known to a larger audience.

  Any time Tim Smith is involved it is always going to be educational. The First Brigade of the Second Division of the First Corps was the “tip of the spear,” and while the 16th Maine did lose a lot because of the courageous stand, not one regiment in that brigade suffered less than 100 captured or missing. The actions of Tilden and his men from Maine made sure that there would be a semblance of a brigade, and a division, that could still be rallied on the heights south of Gettysburg.<br><br>Great video and what a beautiful time of year to be in Gettysburg.

  I’ve learned sooo much more about the Battle of Gettysburg thru this channel JD. There will never be enough stories from Gettysburg. Please keep them coming. Thank you for all you do JD. You keep history alive. What a sad story though. These men were indeed sacrificed.

  My great-great-great grandfather, Holmes Whipple Burlingame, was there with the 104th NY Volunteers that day. &nbsp;Fortunately, he survived the entire war, and left us his memoirs.

  I was born in 1953 in Franklin County Maine, raised in Strong, &nbsp;Maine 11 miles up the Sandy River from Farmington. &nbsp;In college I was the Cadet Commander of the 20th Maine Cadet Brigade at the University of Maine, Orono.<br>We were taught much about COLONEL Chamberlain and the 20th Maine at Gettysburg. &nbsp;I am ashamed to say I knew nothing about the heroic men of Franklin County and the 16th at Gettysburg. <br>Thank you for enlightening us (me) about the heroic men of the 16th and their sacrifices at Gettysburg

  Phenomenal story JD. These soldiers had to have known what could happen to them with what happened in other engagements such as Antietam. To march into engagements such as this makes me admire their courage.

  Growing up watching the movie Gettysburg Colonel Chamberlain of the 20th Maine was my favorite character for some reason. You could definitely say he was the gateway of what sparked my interest in the American Civil War at a young age. The 16th Maines story is equally as important. &nbsp;Definitely enjoyed watching this video!

  Thank you JD!. &nbsp; I was always puzzeled about the 16th ME.. &nbsp;My GG Grandfather was in the 97th NY with baxter&apos;s brigade. &nbsp;Captured the 20th NC flag when rushing the Pits with the 88th PA on their right. &nbsp;Now it makes sense.. &nbsp;The 16th relieved the entire ridge buying the time to get em all out. &nbsp;They knew it.. Just like the men from 1st Minn
