  Either way the 20th Maine was a elite group. Rest with god all that lost their lives during the Civil War .

  I have been to the battlefield many times. All these years I still learn something. Recently have taken to “slice” it up and learn all I can about a certain portion of the field. It’s amazing.

  I was there last week, visiting from the U.K.. The guide told me that the trees today are all different from what they were in 1863. In those days there were lots of chestnut trees but these were destroyed in the last century by chestnut blight.

  Thank you, this was fascinating. At one of the monuments, I realized I was looking down the wrong slope, towards Devil's Den. And I was like no way is this the right place.

  The swinging door part of the charge had nothing to do with the bravery and desperation of the event that lead to a union victory.

  I live in the woods about 60 miles east of Gettysburg Waffles. So I know these woods well but it seems when spring comes along, some dead trees fell and new growth is up, I must reorient myself by large trees or rocks. So revisiting a place from years before would seem difficult, based on my own experience of these woods I live in. And having visited Gettysburg many times it is easy to not be sure where. So much Tranma, death and destruction, you’d think it’s etched in your mind forever. But just as these woods I live in change each year, let alone decades, the only identification marks would be the boulders. Back in 93 I did a vision quest in the mountains of northern Pa.  The rock near me I think I could draw from memory pretty accurately. But then again I wasn’t fighting or dodging lead.   My great-great grandfather was on Big Round Top with the 41st PA Regiment (12th Reserves) under Sykes 5th Corps. during the battle of Gettysburg

  As one of four regiments in the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, V Corps, Army of the Potomac, it fought alongside the 20th Maine, 44th New York, and the 16th Michigan in the defense of Little Round Top. Colonel Strong Vincent, the brigade&apos;s commanding officer (former regimental commanding officer), was mortally wounded during this engagement.<br>The 83rd Pennsylvania suffered the second-highest number of battle deaths among Union Army infantry regiments during the war, second only to the 5th New Hampshire.<br>The Pennsylvanians fighting on own State soils under southern attacks this day.

  A great video on this event. Getting the truth out of chaos is a very hard feat. I do love the little snippets of history, that are also brought out in videos like these.

  I have been studying and visiting the Gettysburg battlefield for over 30 years and still learning new things nearly every day. Just discovered your channel recently and wanted to compliment your approach and dedication. Have been watching videos from Tim and Garry (sure you know them) for many years and always learn something new. Your presentation, however, is different and very well done. Your commentary along with your very knowledgeable well-spoken expert Mike Lentz provided an alternate perspective from what I have seen before. I definitely learned a lot of new stuff from this vid, thanks much. One question or comment I have regarding a single point you made about the rock walls currently lining the 20th Maine&apos;s position. According to Chamberlain, they were not there during the battle and his men stood uncovered or behind existing trees and rocks. As I understand it, he was incensed about the walls being there when he attended the 25th anniversary in 1888. He even feuded with the battlefield authorities demanding the walls be removed. A compromise was reached when it was agreed that a sign would be put up clearly stating the walls were not built until July 3rd, 1863, which stands today along Sykes Avenue.   I&apos;ve been to the 20th Maine position many times. &nbsp;Check out Tom Desjardain&apos;s book &quot;Stand Firm Ye Boys from Maine.&quot; &nbsp;One thing you neglected to show was the &quot;Oates Boulder&quot; the position to which Oates stated he drove Spears line back, and the spot where he saw his brother killed. &nbsp;It&apos;s up on the spur inside Spear&apos;s line. &nbsp;Oates wanted to put a memorial marker there for his brother John, and he and Chamberlain corresponded back about it. &nbsp;The marker was never placed, as it would be inside Union lines.

  My brother and sister and I, when we get together, will reminisce about things we did as kids, and my brother often accuses me of remembering things that never happened and forgetting things that did. &nbsp;I just smile, thinking that it&apos;s really him doing that. &nbsp;I guess we all do that. &nbsp;But, as you say, the only thing we know for sure, an the only thing that matters in the end, &nbsp;is that the Alabamians did their level best to accomplish an impossible task, and the Maine men held their ground. &nbsp;Thanks for another good video. &nbsp;I&apos;ve been on Little Round Top, but never had the time or opportunity to see it as you showed it to us.
