Why are people expected to forgive their parents for mistreating them? If a friend or a partner mistreats them, they aren’t expected to forgive and maintain a relationship with them. Parents shouldn’t get a free pass for mistreating their kids.

My therapist told me once “just because some people wouldn’t describe your childhood as abusive doesn’t mean you didn’t endure trauma” and I think a lot of people need to hear that.

The concept that the CHILD should make the effort to mend things with their parents is absolutely WILD to me. I watched a friend go through that kindof conversation with a family member once. I was appalled by every word and ultimately I just blurted out “He was 12! SHE is the parent, it’s her job!”
