I am starting to believe the internet is one of the worst things to ever happen to us.

I was a gentle father (gen X) and now there is not a single day when my 18 year old boy doesn't tell me he loves me and I am the best father in the universe. We just had two or three arguments in our lives. If I did it, it can't be that difficult.

People that say “Let me give my kid an iPad instead of emotional connection and proper mental stimulation.”
Are the same people who then say “Why are my kids so angry and depressed?”

I’m a millennial (35) and have a 15 year old. I pulled him out of school the first year of middle school because the children were downright disrespectful, entitled, and disgusting. The parents were worse. My son has always been a straight A student and would come home sad, withdrawn, anxious because he was being bullied. They were pressuring him to smoke, steal and when he refused they retaliated by taking his lunch, punching him, ripping his books. The school did nothing. During that school year, I had 7 incident reports and had to file charges on one of the students. That same year I gave him the option of going to private school or being homeschooled. Now he is privately homeschooled. It is a paid homeschool option but effective. His courses consists of law classes, financial and business courses, English, French, Music, Economics, Physics and Advanced Algebra. I managed to land a work from home job and get to stay home with my kiddo everyday. He gets home cooked breakfast, lunch, dinner. We watch TV series on my 1 hour lunch break, and exercise. The best thing, we travel often as I can work and he attend school remotely. Education starts AT HOME. I’m Caribbean and I do not play. Gentle parenting is for gentle children!

When my boys were toddlers my parents offered to buy them iPads as a gift but I asked them not to. I felt kinda bad but I just didn’t feel right about a 1 and 3 year old having that. I wanted them to have a normal childhood like I did- play in the dirt, make forts, build with blocks, ect. I’m so glad I followed that gut feeling now.❤

If you’re trying to cut your iPad kid off, never charge it over 10%. “Loose” the charger and hide the iPad. You might have a screaming child for half an hour, but they won’t die. Let them get bored, let the, use their imagination to play. My three year old got addicted to the iPad for a bit, I realized it and we went cold turkey. Her behavior and speech improved tremendously and she plays more with her toys.

EDITED, MY PARENTS WERE BORN IN 1962 AND 1963, THEY ARE ACTUAL BOOMERS

My parents are in the boomer generation, I'm a 29yo millennial mom of 2 kids, 1 boy 1 girl. I've learned there's a HUGE difference between gentle parenting, and permissive parenting. The actual definition if gentle parenting is to show love, but set FIRM boundaries. I live by the saying "if you're friends with your kids, you raise your grandkids. If you parent your kids, you can be friends with your grandkids." My kids are 6yo and 4yo, I most definitely run the show.

“You are not entitled to a relationship with your child when they are an adult” is one of the best things I’ve ever heard.

I am a teacher and a foster parent. Let me tell you, one of the first things we do for new foster kids that move into our home is a screen detox. We have literally had to sit on the floor with these kids and teach them how to play. Very slowly, we introduce some electronics. We have a very locked-down, limited ipad with some educational games and minecraft on it (no internet access) and a Nintendo Switch with parental controls. If they make poor choices, screens are the first thing to go. All of our foster children have had huge transformations once the ipad babysitters were removed. Suddenly they're excited to get messy, to draw, to run and jump and swim and play. They're filling notebooks with sketches and stories and just marveling at what they are capable of. Because we work with children from hard places who are often processing trauma and neglect, we run a stricter household than most of our friends and family. We are trying our best to make up for lost time from parents who didn't provide any stability. Routine and boundaries are so incredibly important for kids. It's how they feel safe. Hand a kid an ipad and they lose track of the concept of time. They aren't moving their bodies or learning gross motor skills or building their brains with tactile play. They aren't making friends and learning social skills. The ipads make them short-tempered, lonely, and foolish.

I think a big issue with the whole term “gentle parenting” is that parents who are claiming to practice gentle parenting (as how you’ve described it) but really they’re just permissive or even neglectful. For me, it a big reason why I roll my eyes when someone tells me they’re “gentle parenting,” cuz I have no idea if they themselves know what that even means.

On the topic of iPad kids, I used to work in a restaurant and had an experience with a parent and their kid WITHOUT an iPad. The parent had one of those big Eye Spy books and was going through it and reading with their kid, it was the most beautiful thing.
