This video resonated with me because I went through a similar journey - and still working on the last 18 pounds but I’m down 57 pounds from the highest I’ve weighed in my life. The day after I turned 59 I decided I was done and wasn’t going to turn 60 feeling and looking like that. Cutting out drinking and walking is how I started and the weight dropped very quickly at first. It’s slowed but still progressing, and I did relax for some trips I took over the summer but I never fell back into the old habits because I was feeling so much better. I honestly can barely stomach alcohol or anything sweet now. I turn 60 on Sunday and feeling better than I have in a decade. The mobility gains and freedom from pain has been the most surprising to me but also why I will never go back.

Practical advice but I like the most that you aren’t obnoxious. You are genuinely humble and honest. Keep being you x

As a person who has struggled with severe depression for about half my life... i fully see what you mean by "depression is partly a choice." For myself... I have allowed myself to fall into a rut of, bad thought(s) → bad choice → low energy → bad thought. I also think it is partly a choice, not necessarily because one is actively making a "today I will feel depressed" choice, but more so one would not take action and thus choosing to follow the rut they have fallen into over the course of weeks, months, and possibly years. Inaction is still an action. By not acting against my default, I chose to go down that route. Now, do I think it is fully a choice based issue? No, there are other factors of genetics, past experiences, current state of life, so on and so forth. Years of inaction allowed the path I have gone down to become deeply rutted, making it harder and harder to climb up out of the worn down path.

I did notice something during the several weeks prior to my recent hospital stay. I started eating really well, high fiber, high protein, minimal snacking (though I still let myself snack mindfully occasionally), and I felt so so good. I was working a job I easily feel was the worst job I have had in my 30 years, and yet, I still felt so energetic. Once I ended up in the hospital for a week (it was a planned stay, testing for epilepsy) I fell off the new track I was on. I didn't eat much in the hospital, went from 3 meals and a snack, with ~140g of protein and 30g of fiber a day, to maximum 2 meals a day and often not even that with very little fiber and very little protein (we all know how hospital food is). Now that I am out and home for about a week, I feel exhausted. Low low energy, low mood, making the choice to follow my "default" and not the newly forming path I laid out weeks prior. I feel different making the choice to follow my rutted default and to not trek through the new path to help it become rutted.

Many don't/wont accept the idea that depression has a factor in it that is choice based. But for myself personally, experiencing the way I felt eating well versus how I feel now.... yeah, for me there is a strong element of choice in my depression.

Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge with people like me. It has helped me make great strides in my own health.

The airplane extender for the seatbelt is so relatable. This last flight I did it finally connected. I cried. But it was so tight. It was to the end of the belt.
