Thank you so much for supporting my podcast. I hope it helps in your journey to self understanding. I only ask one tiny favour: please click the 'Like' button on this video, and please Subscribe to the channel. Both gestures are free and are the single biggest thing you can do to help me carry on my mission: to remind you that you're not broken, just different and you have always been enough. Alex 💚

70 year old lady here. At last a description that speaks to me and my lifelong struggles. I told a mental health professional in my 50s that I lacked "self esteem." That was the buzz word of the day. I told him that I had to paint on a sense of well being in the morning just like applying an antiperspirant. I explained that this I did each day with a great deal of energy expenditure that left little energy for, say, creative process or pursuing interests outside of surviving the day any part of emotionally or spiritually intact...forget joy. I further stated that the first time a "broke a sweat" this protection evaporated. My one "talent" in life is my adaptability ( my ability to pretzel). So here I am. I'm going to pursue this and pray for another 20 years for " me time."

whoa, when she said "they don't have an exterior shell" I almost fell off my chair! I was diagnosed with ADHD recently, (major depressive and anxiety disorder first), but Ive been saying, all my life, "when I come out from behind the wall Ive built to protect myself, Im like a snail with out a shell - completely vulnerable"

The stress and hyperfocus is amazing… but nobody talks about the recovery period AFTER gets longer and longer as you age. 1 day of stress used to mean you can sleep it off and wake up great the next, when you’re older it can take one or 2 days to feel better!

It's so amazing to me that in the 90s when I was labeled all kinds of things and had had a nervous breakdown no one I know experienced these things or didn't talk about it and it is so nice I know it's took over 30 years for people to openly start talking about it and not being ashamed it's amazing I found this channel thank you for helping people

I earned a Ph.D., before my diagnosis, just so nobody could ever call me “lazy” or “disorganized.” It was 400+ pages of meticulously organized information and concepts. My apartment, of course, is always complete disaster. #adhd

Being a social chameleon has always confounded me. I can be a north London liberal, a country conservative, an arty hedonist, a stern disciplinarian, a woolly do-gooder, a smarty pants, a horsey type, etc etc. I’ve always had loads of different circles of friends and none of them get along. The more I find out about this ADHD lark, the more I’ve been able to understand, accept and forgive myself, and to understand, accept and forgive my kids. Thanks Alex.

As an African they beat the ADHD out of you. Then it shows up later as fibromyalgia and failing to get out of bed, yet you’re not depressed

the way she explained that whole "pretzeling" thing hit me hard. i’ve done that my entire life without even realizing it — constantly twisting myself to fit in, blend in, be what others needed. the moment it really clicked for me was while reading Shift Your Mind by Alexander Brooks, especially where he dives into identity and emotional patterns. it's weird how mindfulness and just getting quiet with yourself can actually reveal who you are under all the layers. that combo of insight and gentleness really helped me start untangling things. kinda wild how it all makes sense now, finally. def something i'll keep coming back to.

Late self diagnosed ADHD'ER here. Found you this last year, Alex. My superpower, being amazingly calm in a crisis (I am a 911 dispatcher in the US/FL)and have realized that is why we ADHD'ers are the best at these type of jobs. Lol We are great multi-taskers!!! Thank you for your podcast and making me feel understood and not alone! I could never understand why my brain never shut off at night and why I can never seem to sleep... and why I hyper-focus and could not understand why I could not focus on everything I wanted to.

I had a 4 year burn out during the pandemic that was triggered by menopause and a life time of over extending myself and masking. I developed a horrendous sensory processing disorder that rendered me housebound. I was anxious, couldn't think, was chaotic, uncoordinated, forgetful. I thought I had dementia. It felt like my life was over. I was too sensitive for stimulants, so had to take non stimulant meds. They helped a little but did nothing for my sensory processing and exhausted burnt-out brain. I started learning about the mind- body connection, the power of self talk, inner child work, and how to desensitise my nervous system ( bessel van der kolk, Howard schubiner, Peter levine, Stephen purges, dick schwartz). In the space of one week my life began to change. 1 year later I am living my best life, feel 20 years younger and I have my brain back. I have a daily practice of grounding, mindfulness and breathwork, so yoga 4-5 times a week, lift heavy 3 times a week, cut sugar, get early morning sun light, child showers, sauna etc ❤
