From Michigan. I bought a brand new vehicle from a GM dealership and it wasn’t cheap. 2 days later the vehicle died. 3 months later the vehicle still not fixed. Got tired of all of excuses and lies so called my best friend who is a 30 plus years master mechanic who knows gas and Diesel engines inside and out and he highly respected and has all the tools and equipment/machines to get the job done. I had him pick up my vehicle to his shop and he  had it fixed in less than a week. The dealership said I voided the factory warranty because I had the vehicle fixed elsewhere. I couldn’t drive my new vehicle for 3 months and was making payments. They didn’t give me a rental car. A long story short it’s in court and it’s not looking good for GM. I love my best friend. He’s simply the best.🔧💪👍❤️

The Honda CEO said it best.  "When congress passed emissions standards we hired engineers and GM hired lawyers"

The sediment in that oil pan needs to be looked at under a microscope.

As a former employee of 32 years at a major automotive manufacturing facility (engine plant), I can tell you with 100% certainty that the engineers and operators that find defects and quality concerns are pretty much ignored. I’ve seen first hand when tolerances are exceeded, the parameters are changed on the fly so production isn’t impeded. I guarantee GM knows EXACTLY what the issue is but as always, it’s all about money. Good job on the forensic breakdown.

It boggles my mind how production had been moved out of the usa to save money but yet prices of new vehicles is so high it's out of control and then reliability just keeps going down! The citizens of our country are just getting screwed from every direction!

Hard to believe in just five decades Chevy went from building the most bulletproof small blocks on the planet to this.

When GM says it doesn't meet their standards you know it's bad.

Crank manufacturing person here. The oil hole chamfers are fine, you dont want a sharp edge. Ra is an "average"  surface, which is not what you want to be checking during "failure-type" checks. Rz is much more sensitive to surface issues. The crank journals are the canary in the coal mine, the will score first and the bearings will show valleys way before failure. The issue to focus on is the debris in the oil. What kind of debris is it, aluminum,  steel, has it been hardened. Find the debris material type, and you find the real issue.

I'm a 40 year Senior Metrologist from the diesel engine industry and old associate of Dr. Mark Malburg.   1) You need to have a profilometer with a 2-micron radius to see the extreme valley to peaks.     2) the bearing (s) shows a uniform waviness that CAN NOT be checked with a skidded profilometer.  It also needs to be studied on the crank in a Metrology lab as the bearing is collateral damaged.  The waviness you see gets away from the R parameters and into the W parameters.   The R parameters can do more by using bearing ratio parameters.  After you look at bearing ratio and then waviness there, then shape (GD&T) refinements in the range of 5 to 10 microns may be on the prints.  These are basically lab measurements unless the company is highly sophisticated. to have something to monitor production checks with.   I suspect two things done poorly at the factory.   Too big of a chamfer and poor dressing of the grinding wheel if plunge ground (or if it oscillates then machine wear).   There is also some rules to grind and polish in the direction as to not leave a tooth.    I often ask how many microns of error equate to how long before failure.   Some things can break-in given the cooling and flushing effect of oil and this may help a problem go away if the owner is gentler past the normal break in period.
