the fact that the oil filter was almost empty instantly tells me there was no oil in the oil pan during the test drive

As a LIFELONG mechanic thats been to about every school there was for Mechanics and Im 82 years young and retired for 19 years, Im completely on board with you. That engine was clearly ran without oil. The other Shop made an AGES OLD mistake of trying to do TOO many things at one time and hen WHOEVER changed the oil he was also busy doing other things and forgot to put oil back into that engine. Believe it or not when I went to school to be a mechanic the very first thing they taught us was when you do an oil change do it when THAT IS THE ONLY THING YOU ARE DOING AT THE TIME AND COMPLETE IT BEFORE MOVING TO SOMETHING ELSE. That tidbit of knowledge stuck with me all my life.

That shop owes this guy an engine and your labor to bring that truck back up to where it was when they got it. If they don't, they need to not be in the business anymore. Own up to your mistakes and make it right and it will work out.

With no bearing material in the filter means there wasn’t any oil in the crankcase circulating when the engine seized

Connor needs to lawyer up, the obvious mistake that the oil was drained and they drove the truck with no oil, and to have his truck torn apart like that is disgusting.

They never filled it. The oil filter wasnt full of oil. Even if they drained the oil, the filter would still be full.

Lake Speed is final word , 65 year old diesel mechanic. I also owned and operated a heavy duty diesel machine shop in Central Florida for 10 years. Its always a challenge to unwind a failed project from another shop. Great Job Dave ,being strait foward and honest is always the way to go .

As a shop owner lost 2 engines in 32 years both times called the insurance company no problem as a shop owner and a believer in Christ if I make a mistake I own it period.

The key to this whole thing is that the oil filter only was partially full.
6.7 or 5.9 Cummins oil filter.Have you ever taken off after doing an oil change has had half full oil? They're always full overflowing, trying to spell out on the ground

Which means the shop did not put oil in the motor.
And ran the motor dry

Oops forgot to put oil back in! The problem is not forgetting oil (well that is a problem) but trying to cover up the mistake instead of doing the right thing.

The reason the oil level was so low was because the engine was ran dry on oil. They filled the oil filter, the engine was started, it sucked in the oil from the filter down to the level it loss suction and then just ran dry until it was turned off. The little bit of oil at the bottom is consistent of this happening.
