  Why are senior citizens that sell their house that took them forever to pay for have to pay higher premiums for health care . Nothing like stealing every last dime you have

  Section 121 was passed into law in 1997. The capital gains exemption ($250k/500k) has remained exactly the same for 28 years. &nbsp;Not right. Congress needs to raise the exemptions to reflect increased real estate values compared to 1997.

  This hit me in exactly the way he described. &nbsp; &nbsp;Sold a house and it’s brought my Medicare cost up for two years. &nbsp; &nbsp;But I’m hoping it’ll go down this year. &nbsp; &nbsp; It’s criminal that they don’t calculate exactly when you sell the house and bring your payment back down at the anniversary date. &nbsp; &nbsp;They have all the information. &nbsp; &nbsp;Making people pay a penalty for two years is seriously f’ed up

  What bothers me about capital gains on a home is that it is not adjusted for inflation. Homes cost more due to inflation!

  Not only does it stink to pay Irmaa for this, but if you lived in your home for 30 years, paying untold thousands in property taxes, thousands more in maintenance, &nbsp;then the government gets to take money as capital gains to steal some of your retirement away. &nbsp;It&apos;s not like an investment property where the goal is to make a profit. &nbsp;Just a home that happens to naturally &nbsp;increase in value over decades, &nbsp;and could be used to support your retirement if needed.
