  The reason this seems like a episode of the Twilight Zone is that Rod Serling (creator of Twilight Zone) was one of the writers of this screenplay.

  My dad said seeing this in the theaters everyone sat in stunned silence at the end.

  Saw this one at a theater, when released in the late 60s. Audience leave the theater speechless. At that time, it was a schock!!!!!

  THANK YOU for reacting to this masterpiece!, I was 7 years old in march of 1968 when my older brother took me to see planet of the apes!,  we sat in the third row and this was the first movie I ever saw in the theatre, I was scared to death when the apes first appeared, and the ending blew everybodies minds as the audience was dead silent in shock. this movie touches on topics such as racism, classism, and nuclear war which was the greatest percieved threat in 1968.  this movie REMAINS in my top 10 movies of all time list in 2025 at the age of 65!.

  The sequel Beneath The Planet of the Apes continues straight on from the end of this and explains more of what happened.

  German here 63 years old from Berlin - West, I have already experienced some phases in history where it was doubtful that things would end well. I am more than sure that happiness is finite and I conclude from our behavior that we are simply not learning and things will no longer end well with luck. <br>This film held a mirror right in front of our faces and showed us our own Grimasse. An absolute masterpiece with brilliant actors.

  Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling created the final twist to the screenplay, which didn&apos;t originally feature in the book.<br>Charlton Heston is a Hollywood legend, who famously played Moses in The Ten Commandments and Ben Hur in Ben Hur.

  I saw this at the drive-in when I was a kid. The end was so stunning and dark. And keep in mind that this was during the cold war and not long after having nuclear bomb drills in school. A movie ahead of its time in so many ways.

  Considering what Dr. Zaius knows I think it&apos;s a given he knows how closely Apekind is already following Humanities footsteps. He an others like him are probably trying to slow down the technological development so that his people have time to adapt better than humans did. Even if it&apos;s probably a fool&apos;s hope, something he probably realises as well, it&apos;s better than no hope at all. Because the alternative is that apes wipe themselves out.
