When the movie was made, everyone was worried about the world ending from nuclear war, so when Taylor says, "You maniacs! You blew it up," the implication is that it was nuclear war that wiped out human civilization and turned parts of the planet into deserts, with apes then evolving intelligence in the post-apocalyptic world that came after.

To CHI: I remember dolls like that from the 1960's. They didn't have a battery to go dead; they had some kind of thing inside that made that noise when you tipped it from side to side, or turned it over. That was a real one in the movie. It only kind of sounded like "Mama."

It's not a time machine, but when you travel very fast, near the speed of light, time moves very slow for you and fast for outsiders. Effect is called time dilation. So the ship went into the future by traveling very fast, but there's no way to go backwards in time, only forward in real life. The ship also had a navigational error so that's why it looped around and crashed back on earth instead of the intended destination. BTW, besides just going really fast, if you are near a massive object, like a black hole, time also can move thousands of times faster too. The high gravity warps space-time. This was shown in the movie "Interstellar"

"Don't trust anyone over 30" was a popular saying during the counterculture of the 1960s hippie movement, the time at which this movie was made.
