my dad was born in 1918. he would tell about working in the woods in the winters. he said for lunch he would take two slices of bread and slather them with bacon grease. come lunch time he would build a fire and toast his sandwiches over the flames. he said they were delicious.

Vinegar pie is delicious! My great grandma also made a vinegar based "hard sauce" that was poured over blueberry muffins. So so good

I grewup in the 70's in Michigan and my granny made a lot of these foods so I learned the value of them at a young age and I still consume them to this day and when I make venison sausage I add pork with it for fat and put that in a crackpot with beans and there ya go!

I worked at Lester for Scott Paper and at Ketchikan Pulp and Paper in SE Alaska I worked up at Neah Bay for Crown Z we always had steaks, eggs, and hotcakes for breakfast oatmeal and corn meal mush were optional. Lunch was a spike table where you made your own. Supper was roast beef, roast pork, porkchops or steaks, your choice of baked potato or mashed along with vegetables. After supper there was sheet cake or pies. We ate beans on occasion. Nobody on the west coast would work for the gut robbers you described.
