Everyone talks about Henry liking Anne of Cleaves after their divorce, but this is exactly why she gets out of court and doesn't fight the divorce like Katherine did or try and play around him like the others did. You can't reason with someone like this, just placate them

And then there's the famous story that Christina of Denmark giggled when Henry's representative claimed he was "the gentlest prince in Christendom" during an attempt to get Christina to become wife #4. She well knew that Henry was not gentle in any way or by any definition.

Katherine Parr, too: she dared to "dispute" with him about theological matters, and he got really mad, and she quickly had to backtrack and be like, "Oh, I was just playing devil's advocate so I could hear your arguments! Because I wanted to LEARN from you, because you're just so much SMARTER than me!!" and then he was appeased. I'm starting to wonder to what degree a modern psychologist would say he has a narcissistic personality disorder. Can't stand to feel like he's been "shown up" by ANYBODY. And when he feels like he is (whether it's a reasonable conclusion or not), he goes into this terrible rage and Awful Things Happen. EDIT: Oh look, you said the same thing! okay I'm prouder of my conclusion now lol

Im a self admitted tudorphile so this is definitely one of my favorite episodes, BUT Gareth talking about so much more than the wives opened my eyes to how I really didn’t know much more than cursory info about Henry himself as well as the politics of his reign. Honestly you’re the worst because now I have a whole new rabbit hole to dive down. BUT wonderful episode, Gareth is a true story teller and drew me in so well. The swiftie crossover at the end was the icing on the cake- Maddy is right, Anne is def singing reputation and Henry is definitely a tortured poet 😂

One of the most enjoyable episodes yet. And that is truly high praise since I am a huge fan of After Dark. But such an interesting perspective into Henry VIII, one that I've never heard before. Has me wanting to know more.

I think about how when prince Arthur died, his parents were like -we are still young, we can have another child...
NOT counting on Henry at all 😅

    Gareth Russell? ✋️Say no more.

....Unless it is to say that this conversation will go for 4 hours, and I will listen gleefully and diligently for its entirety 🙏

A large part of being a historian is sharing history with the public, and social media is the best way to do that, especially with younger audiences. Many creators are sharing inaccurate "slop", so it's even more important that trained historians are putting out content to counteract it.

"All smash, no plan." Yeah, that feels like what we're enduring in the U.S.

The punishments handed out in the Kildare Rebellion also goes show the absurdity of the idea that the fall from the horse in 1536 flipped some switch and he went from saint to murderous tyrant. He always had that in him.
