AUM model is atrocious. 1-1.25% after 30 yrs means you've given 26-32% of your wealth away.

The problem is where and how can you be assured that a financial advisor that you choose is "GOOD".

i am in the process of dropping my advisor i believe i am not getting the value out of them for what i pay it is worth it to run your money yourself because no one protects your money like yourself an advisor will put the money in accounts that will help them to.

I’m perfectly happy to pay for an advisor at this point in time. I don’t have all day to watch the market and I have no idea how to utilise tax loss harvesting etc. For me it’s about knowledge base, simplification and stress mitigation.

i’ve had two financial advisors, and maybe I am the outlier, but I had more stress and more anxiety and less comfort when someone else was managing what I built. I am the type of person that does enjoy figuring out tax strategies, where to pull my assets first, etc..

I understand all that a good holistic advisor can do. My hang-up is paying $20,000/yr on my hopefully 2M portfolio . $1666/ month. I get $80k/yr. And they get $20k. That's what still irks me

I agree with all your comments, and I am one of those people who is completely confident and really enjoys doing everything that you’ve detailed. My wife, not so much but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna pay an advisor now… our contingency plan is if something happens to me I’ve got everything written out. She can then engage with an advisor if she likes, but I don’t see a reason to do that now ( pay now) in the off chance that I pass away early.

I pay that advisor fee to myself and learn everything I need to know from reading books, using AI and you-tube.

I'll never need an advisor because my retirement portfolio is on autopilot, and it will meet 100% of our financial needs. Any deviation from the plan would introduce unnecessary risk just to chase additional, unneeded income. No thanks.

I like your final closing message, it makes sense

James nails it with the sequence of returns and a tax strategy being the key factors. I waited to go to a CFP until I've got a good sum and 5 years before early retirement. I wanted to a solid tax plan going forward and the CFP has helped me build that plan. At this point it isn't about wealth creation or wealth growth, but wealth preservation from Uncle Sam.
