This was a great treat for me, pretending to be in London and enjoying afternoon tea while you tasted and commented on the items served.

That's a shocking amount to pay for some sandwiches, desserts, and tea. Thanks for sharing.

We just had afternoon tea at the Dorchester a few weeks ago and I totally agree with your review. The sandwiches were just a bit above average. The scones were excellent and the desserts were as well. To those who are wondering, everyone gets the amuse-bouche and the palate refresher. They were both very nice added touches. (We were actually able to select our amuse-bouche from a beautiful trolley cart which was wheeled to our table). We had excellent service and absolutely loved the atmosphere! It was spectacular in every way! Just gorgeous and very luxurious. It was very expensive, but we viewed it as an experience and a beautiful memory made while visiting London.

A great question to end with.
Personally I’d have scored The Dorchester lower than you did - I’d have knocked a point off for the server. The atmosphere and setting are clearly superior , as is the quality of the individual ingredients. I think for most of the high end afternoon teas you are paying for the experience overall, not just the food.
If I wanted a cheap afternoon tea, I’d be having it at home: the Slug and Lettuce one looked depressing and there was no sense of occasion.
I love watching your afternoon tea reviews!

I'm not against having afternoon tea in a pub, but this one didn't appeal to me at all.
I used to make Afternoon Tea for a group of friends. Sometimes we would have 20 to 25 people attending. I didn't make really fancy sandwiches, but I did serve 4 or 5 types.
I also made hot scones with high quality preserves and clotted cream. And lots of desserts. Including shortbread, trifle and fruit salad. I had 3 types of tea, coffee, and sodas available to drink. Since most people had to drive home, no alcohol was served.
Yes, we can buy clotted cream in our local supermarkets in San Antonio, Texas. (We can buy food from all over the world. And we have restaurants serving food from all over the world.)

Back in the day. The Lyons Corner Houses were giving good service to the general public. Cakes came on a stand ,& pots of tea/coffee.

Am I the only one who was disappointed that he cut into the camera man’s birthday cake and had the audacity to eat it first too?! Outrageous and infuriating!!!

When we are going fancy, we need to visit the Loos. Nice soaps and hand cream? Luxury fittings? Space. A flattering mirror to check we are not covered in chocolate cake! I though the Sleepy Slug did well on the savouries offering a range of textures. A crispy option was rather appealing. Up against the fancy sandwiches, I thought they scored in how visually the variety was enticing. The row of uniform sandwiches didn't draw me in as much.

This would be my hubby’s preference for a tea. It all looked good.

When I came to London in 70,s I work as a manicurist in barber shop there. every day after afternoon tea the left overs were brought to the cantin next door, I useto gorge on those...those were the days...it was also affordable to bring my family for tea there when they visited me...
