Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger have an absolute field day here. A brave, uncompromising film from Norman Jewison.

Sidney Poitier was in several movies during the civil rights era that helped change racial attitudes ....other of his movies you might enjoy are 'To Sir With Love' , 'Lilies of the Field', 'A Patch of Blue' , 'Guess Who's  Coming to Dinner' and 'A Raisin in the Sun'.

Poitier spoke out loud and proud for our rights to be seen as equal to anyone else.  His marches in civil rights were not just for show.  Poitier became instrumental in our people gaining the rights we hold so dear.  Unfortunately several of those rights have been thrown in the trash, the last few years.  Yes, we are fighting, again, to regain those rights.  And it's exhausting.

Another great movie with a similar subject is Mississippi Burning (1988) Starring Gene Hackman and Willem Defoe.

5 out of 5, more Sidney Poitier please.  You’re so right, so many layers with this movie.

This movie was filmed in Sparta, Illinois, a small town in Southern Illinois which is only about 50 miles from where I live. The town was chosen to stand in as a Mississippi town since Sidney Portier was not comfortable shooting the film in Mississippi during the tumult of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.The scene on the bridge where the guy is trying to run away was filmed in Chester, Illinois another small town where the Chester Bridge connects Illinois and Missouri over the Mississippi River. Southern Illinois is very rarely used as a location for movies so I thought I would give my home  a shout out.
