Best before dates are a guide. Don't throw tins out as long as they haven't blown or rusted.

My Nan kept tinned food in the wardrobe upstairs in the spare room. (WWII mentality remained I think).

I live across the pond in rural Maine - I live simply - do all my cooking and baking on a cook woodstove, which also heats my home ,rice, beans, root vegetables, flour, sugar, cocoa, tea, spices and herbs all combine to make hearty meals and yummy treats this has brought me great peace and i am wishing all health, love and laughter

My grandparents and great grandparents always had a ‘pantry’ where stock would be kept and built up for winter. I have followed this ever since. Make jam, bottled fruit etc. Never been caught out yet and can always rustle up something tasty. During Covid l didn’t have to shop for much food at all.

Victoria plums grown in our garden were bottled by Mum and stored in my brothers top wardrobe. I had Bramley apples wrapped in paper under the spare bed next to mine. Dad made a hundred weight of different marmalades and runner beans were frozen. We never went hungry as children as Dad grew so much in our garden. Happy days, wish I could turn back the clock...

We lived far out in the country and we had to stock up because the roads were often snowed in for days in winter. We stocked up on garden vegetables and orchard fruits in our root cellar. We did home canning of our own beef and pork. We only had a small refrigerator so we couldn't stock up on frozen items like I do now. When we did go to the grocery store we stocked up on flour, sugars, cereals, spices and other staples. We had our own milk cow so we always had our own milk, cream and butter.<br>The things we didn't often have in winter were citrus fruits, ice cream or fish or seafood. Those were rare treats.

My Mom and Dad pickled beets and peppers. They made use and stocked up on root vegetables and flour. My Mom made split pea and ham soup and Spinach and tomato soup in large batches. We had a good supply of canned vegetables and fruit.
