my fam loves halloween but a lot of our decor is 20+ years old. we take it in and out of a storage bin in the garage every year, and i just assumed that was the norm for everyone. but people are SHOCKED that we use the same decor from my childhood, and some actually look down on it?

it’s always a “restock” when we didn’t even need a stock in the first place …..

My grandma used to send me what was, essentially, a boo basket every year when I was a kid. She would bake cookies and mail them in a big package with Halloween plushies, stickers, books, etc. It was the best. And omg, the best cookies you've ever had in your life. It was the perfect thing to get a kid excited for the coming holidays. Now THAT was a great boo basket.

Boo baskets started years ago (we did them when I worked at a Dr's office in 2007-10) but they were either SMALL baskets of candy, or Halloween themed items with a note saying "You've been Booed" and a message saying to gift a basket to someone else but don't let them know you did it. They were cute and just an extra fun thing to make someone smile when they came to work and found a gift on their desk.

Honestly everything has become so adult focused in the name of nostalgia now-a-days that soon we'll have a generation that thinks all these holidays are overrated

Something I think is related to the over-comsumption- how early everything starts! I saw halloween and fall items in stores in July, and now there's winter and Christmas stuff. It's like by the time the actual season/holiday comes around, stores have already moved on so you're SOL if you needed something. It creates a sense of urgency and scarcity- buy it now or else it won't be here if you need it.

the most baffling thing about the practice of refilling glass containers with drinks that already have their designated packaging is that it reduces the shelf life of these products, opening a sealed bottle of juice JUST to put the juice in another container will just make the juice expire faster, especially if you're not gonna drink it right away after opening it... Do these people not read the labels? For almost any drink the label usually says "once opened, consume within three to five days"

As someone who does not have the tiktoks and only uses YouTube, the only exposure I have to these trends are videos like this that pop up on occasion.

I find it fascinating, as it puts a spotlight on an issue that I've been completely insulated from

Halloween used to feel so sacred to me - it FELT like the one holiday that was mostly untouchable when it came to it being commercialized (like Valentines day or Christmas) but it really feels like social media has changed that for the worse. Since the rise of tiktok I have seen more and more Halloween merchandise that is available - thats not to say it wasn't available before, but it wasn't as big of a deal as it was years past. Last year I took my kid out trick or treating - we hit EVERY house that was decorated - all but 2 said they were not passing out candy, that they were decorated for looks. And I get that! There is absolutely no obligation to hand out candy to children, but it feels like the spirit of Halloween is just dead now, and its become nothing but aesthetic.
