Years ago I worked for a delightful couple from Sweden. Everything in their home was immaculate. Inside cupboards, drawers , closets & refrigerator. Everything was perfectly arranged. My boss taught me a lot about cleaning & how to fold clothes & bedding, etc. (I never knew there is a way to fold & iron a fitted sheet to make it look the way it did when you first took it out of the package).

They never wore shoes in their home. Which is an excellent idea that people are doing more & more nowadays.
Their entire home looked like a photograph from “Better Homes & Gardens” magazine. Their driveway was so clean you could even eat off of it if you had to. 😀

What was never in their home was an excess of “stuff”. Once a month my boss would go through closets & dressers to get rid of things, donate them.

She was joyful when she was cleaning. And she told me in Sweden they would get together and have a cleaning party with friends in each other’s homes and clean together. Helping each other. And afterwards they’d have a little luncheon. It was just a normal thing.
✨Thank you for your video! 🦋

There are some great habits in Sweden or at least when I was young. Lagom meaning just right and only so much that there is enough for everyone. Being outside at least once a day. Only getting candy one day of the week. Fredagsmys means cosy Friday, where you spend time with your loved ones or on your own often watching tv/movie and eating/drinking something tasty.
We also only got toys for birthdays and for christmas. That way we didn't have so many and they where often of better quality. Another Scandinavian habit ist to instead of having much decor, we look for beautiful everyday items that we use. The toaster looks sleek, nice plates, fruit in a bowl

I’m 64, I have just painted my lounge room pink, moving all the furniture and laying carpet tiles as I went. Now you tell me I could have just moved 5 things!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I am a Swede so this video/podcast is interesting to listen to. Lagom is for sure a big part of the typical Swedish lifestyle. Something that always strikes me is that American minimalists have soooo much more stuff than I do, and I am not even a minimalist - just a Swede. However, we seem to have less than many of our friends/acquaintances. But I do believe people in the Nordic countries are more minimalist than some other places in the world.

Here are two things on the theme of “easy, small.” I sometimes, when it occurs to me, do an “Explore-A-Drawer.” I just take five or ten minutes and see what l’ve got in a drawer, or shelf, or bin. Not with the goal of getting rid pf anything, or organizng (although sometimes I find crap I don’t need). I just forget what I’ve got, and just dig around to see what I’ve got. I can’t tell you how often I’ve come away from that finding something I thought I lost or forgotten that I had. The other thing I do is “Drop’N’Shop.” When I go on my main, weekly grocery shopping trip, I’ll quickly look around the house for something to declutter. At this point, it’s usually two or three things. On the way over to the grocery store I’ll drop those things off at the thrift store before I go shopping for groceries. I don’t even have to think about it. Again, it takes just a minute or two.

I used to be so offended when men treated me like a "little lady". Once I learned how to change a tire and was so excited when I was on the hwy and I got a flat!! I was so ready!! Well, 2 guys pulled over to "help" me and I just wanted to cry!! When I told my dad what happened, he said to me, "you'll have another chance to change a tire, but in that moment those guys wanted to be kind. The world needs more kindness, so we need to appreciate it when it comes." My parents were divorced so I didn't get dadly wisdom very often. That one hit home and has stayed with me ever since. It can be frustrating because we want to prove some things to ourselves. But kindness is rare and we need to encourage more of it-- even if it feels patronizing. 😊

My mom took death cleaning to a new level. When she passed away, I found a house devoid of many of the things (pictures, furniture, art) I’d loved from childhood. They were just…gone. It was horrible and felt like another death to my brain. I was continually searching for the missing familiars. Don’t leave clutter to your family — absolutely— but if your family are not the same level of minimalist as you, be mindful of that as well & maybe ask if they would like any of the things before ditching them.

You have helped me so much! Thank you❤ I'm 56 disabled and poor health. I got so overwhelmed. Depression and anxiety has been horrible but you have given me the encouragement and tools to understand....just start. So...I just started. It took me over a week on the first room. It still needs to be painted, prettyfied :) ...another time but I can't stop opening that door and smiling. Everything is in its home and I've now moved to another room, decluddered and now working finding everything's home in the room. I already feel so much lighter and it's finally feeling like ...my home.
