I always loved how the emperor refuses to bow under threat, but then bows to Mulan after. Highest show of respect.

My favorite moment is when “a girl worth fighting for” stops so abruptly at the little girl’s village. The reality of war is that glory is a lie. War is about fighting for someone who needs protection, someone who can’t fight for themselves. Sometimes the girl worth fighting for is a little girl, and sometimes it’s a father with injuries. Honor isn’t gendered. People who are capable should act to protect those who are vulnerable. I love that Nick gets that.

I love Mulan's father. He never stopped loving his daughter, even at her lowest.

14:20 The dragon didn't wake up because it went with Mulan already.
Since the moment she sits under the statue, sad, while it was raining, she took the bravery of the dragon guardian... and decided to go to war for love and honour.
She became the dragon guardian. 🐉✨

I never made the connection before between “A Girl Worth Fighting For” and the doll representing a murdered child. She, indeed, is truly a girl worth fighting for.

42:27 Shan Yu wasn't embarrassed to be beaten by a girl since he referred to Mulan as "the soldier from the mountains"

Women had more equality amongst the Huns which is why he held nothing back.

24:59 What I just realized the last time I watched Mulan was she was given a FREE PASS to go home and save her own life yet she chose to stay and succeed to honor her family. 😭

"no matter how the wind howls the mountain cannot bow to it" goes so hard

something I've always liked about this movie is how every "mistake" actually ends up being beneficial... it's just that no one knows how in the moment. like, prime example... if Mushu hadn't made up the orders to march, they wouldn't have found out about the defeat of Shang's father, or intercepted the enemy before they could reach the capital.

and, when Mushu accidentally sets off the firework in the cart, it did reveal their location to the enemy forces. but also, the enemy had to reveal themselves... they'd set up an ambush. if Shang's troops had continued to march through the pass, the enemy would've just rained arrows down on them and caught them completely off guard. instead, the rocket made the enemy think they'd been found out, so they fired the arrows early, and revealed their location without being able to take advantage of that position. as soon as the arrows start, Shang shouts "get out of range" which is only possible because they weren't too close to begin with.

and even Mulan getting revealed as a woman and abandoned in the mountains allows her to hang back and realized that the enemy forces aren't dead. her move was still the right one... Shang's troops couldn't have taken out that many enemies on their own, and they all would've died trying to fight the traditional way. but things also would've been disastrous if they had either lingered long enough to get caught up in the same fight again, or if they'd all left. they needed to leave one person behind.

also, one of my favorite things about this movie is the way Mulan and Shang parallel each other's struggles. in the beginning, Mulan is expected to be a well behaved woman and perfect future bride. and her father is particularly worried about her ability to do this... her whole family is, but it's him that we see praying for her success. so Mulan goes to the matchmaker, who scrutinizes her from the perspective of traditional femininity, and declares her a failure. this is very similar to the way Shang is scrutinized by the emperor's advisor, who will watch his every move with similar disapproval, while Shang tries to display that he can effectively train and lead a unit in the army. Shang has his own traditionally masculine role that his father, specifically, is invested in seeing him achieve.

the major difference between Shang and Mulan, is that Mulan is an out-of-the-box thinker. meanwhile Shang is competent in his role, and he's dead set on proving that his position is earned, rather than nepotism. but both Shang and Mulan are doing this for the sake of their fathers... to bring them honor. and while Shang's father, the competent military man who seems untouchable, stays in the box, along with Shang's expectations... Mulan has already broken out of her role entirely by the time the two meet, and is the type to accomplish her true goals by any means necessary, regardless of the demands of traditionalism.

when Mulan's father is called upon to enlist, she's willing to admit that he probably won't survive if he goes. "honor" would demand that he stoically ignore this, and give his life willingly but uselessly, to a cause that he's already given himself over to once before. Mulan takes her father out of danger by going in his place, and it works. by contrast, Shang not only can't save his father from his eventual demise... but he almost follows in his father's footsteps, right to his own end. the one who saves him is Mulan.

so when Mulan is revealed to be a woman, Shang has to admit that not only did she successfully save her own father while Shang is mourning his, but if Mulan had stayed home, Shang wouldn't even be here. Mulan's father couldn't have done the things that Mulan has done... and without her, no one would've been there to save his life.

and the cherry on top is that, after the movie is over, Mulan does seem to be forming a budding relationship with Shang. the matchmaker couldn't have been more wrong about Mulan's ability to land a husband... she just never could've anticipated how she'd do it.

Some people find it odd that after "The Girl Worth Fighting for," there are no more musical numbers. I think it works perfectly. The movie goes from a musical with war undertones to a movie about war (as far as Disney was able to). Also, the doll of the girl killed in the raid is the "girl worth fighting for." They realise that what actually matter is not a fictional girl they may impress with their war-skills or wtv, but the children, girls and boys alike, who they can safe. I love the tonal shift!

8:15 Mulan has two voice actresses.
The singing is done by Lea Salonga, who's a very famous musical theatre singer and also the singing voice of Jasmine in Aladdin
The speaking role is a young Ming-na Wen, who you'll probably know best as Fennec Shand in the Mandalorian and book of Boba Fett
