  I think a lot of people are confusing empathy with compassion. A person can have low empathy and not understand/detect how other people are feeling, but once they learn what someone is feeling they want to help and make the other person feel better. Compassion and the desire to help is more important than empathy I think

  Partner of 15yrs has dxed ASPD. They&apos;re not cackling villains, it&apos;s a trauma based attachment disorder probably w genetic elements.

  This disorder is way, WAY over represented in that career field. Saying &quot;He couldn&apos;t get that job if he really had ASPD&quot; is bonkers

  Psychopaths can absolutely become homicide detectives. Studies have identified a number of careers that people with high-functioning ASPD gravitate to more than other jobs. These were law enforcement, the military, high finance, intelligence (spies) and high-risk/high adrenaline jobs like Fire and rescue, paramedics and saturation diving.

  I never thought I’d say this, but the fact that the people in the Detective AMA couldn’t possibly believe that a psychopath could be able to do certain things is… kinda ableist.<br><br>Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if police departments had a larger concentration of psychopaths relative to the general population. It’s not that difficult to fathom.

  I am a childhood torture survivor and it’s not something that leaves you ever, once you’re aware of what people can do to each other you’re hyper-aware forever. Every single minor conflict, every single bad look, every car that slows down near me - I think about what can happen when someone gains full power to take out their anger or sadism on you. It’s a feeling beyond helplessness, beyond fear. It’s impossible to put into words.
