  Honestly Minecraft shows that unless you know what your doing games aren't designed to be constantly updated over the course of 15 years.

  I agree with your take that pre-beta 1.8 and modern Minecraft are totally different games, but there is one major thing you are missing:<br>Notch&apos;s intention was always to create an rpg-style game, heck one of the primary inspirations for Minecraft was Dwarf Fortress, a game which not only has heavy rpg elements and a fantasy setting but completely lacked the simplicty of pre-beta 1.8 Minecraft, instead being far more complex similar to modern Minecraft. The Adventure Update was not a change in direction, but rather a realisation of Notch&apos;s original concept for the game. The pre-1.8 style game was much more of a happy accident than anything else, it came about not intentionally but rather as a side effect of planned features being unimplemented.<br><br>The only real change in direction was the implementation of more realistic, and less fantastical terrain, something that was somewhat reverted with Caves and Cliffs, that&apos;s realistically the only decision that I think can realistically be called a misstep (especially the massive oceans, which were cool in theory but didn&apos;t work in practice).<br><br>If you want to play a game similar to old Minecraft but with more updates, I&apos;d suggest playing mods such as Better than Adventure which seek to continue to develop the game in the pre-beta 1.8 direction. I think that BTA is a great mod and does exactly what it says on the box.<br><br>Finally I would like to say, the existence of Modern Minecraft in no way affects old Minecraft, I see 15 years of free updates as an unambiguously positive thing, and sure as you&apos;ve said, any game that is continuously updated for a long period is going to change and evolve, and if you don&apos;t like the direction, then you can play beta 1.7.3, or BTA. Personally I deeply appreciate both modern and old-school Minecraft.

  Tbh versions like 1.0 or 1.2.5 still feel a lot different from modern minecraft despite being the full release

  I don&apos;t fully agree. To me what made the world interesting wasn&apos;t the wacky terrain but rather the aesthetic. When they changed the textures i never recovered from it until i played the silver age of minecraft because i didn&apos;t like the golden age either.

  I played on a beta 1.7.3 server a couple years ago, it started as a nostalgia trip, but I actually stayed engaged in playing way longer than I ever did in later versions, it really surprised me.

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAjZcbU6Y9k&amp;t=677">11:17</a> Slight correction, no one used diamond armor because protection used to be directly tied to durablility, so by the time your diamond arnor was at half durability it was better just to make a new set of iron armor and wear that instead because it offered you more protection.

  I still find it funny that pre-Beta 1.8 is considered to be the &quot;golden age&quot; of Minecraft when by all possible metrics Minecraft had reached its highest highs post-release closer to 1.4 - 1.5

  Glad you talked about Caves &amp; Cliffs bc yea it was flat and repetitive in early release but now we have cool/weird/unique terrain features again. Also the giant oceans you mentioned were removed in release 1.7 which was also a terrain gen overhaul
