It was quite the rush to get this one out before the year ended, but I managed to pull it off! As ever, I'm always interested to hear what you guys have to say in the comments, and if you're watching shortly after this video releases, happy 2024!

its minecraft's sense of wonder that has faded. people think they want extravagance, but the reality is they want to feel a sense of joy. not simple satisfaction, not becoming overpowered, but a curiousity for what new thinkg there is to do alone or with friends

I like some of the new "useless" mobs me and my dad are building a zoo together and it's nice to have some polar bears even if they aren't strictly useful.

The cake metaphor for MC content creation finally put the feeling I've had into words. Mostly I watch long-lasting SMPs or older series despite trying to dip my toes into the newer videos since they have more heart put into it. That's not to say none of new MC vids have heart, but the ones that do sadly don't seem to get all the views. Superb video my guy

22:33 “barring its block variants” don’t. Copper’s main use is in building and it was later expanded to redstone and archaeology

Oh, those "useful survival" players...
- Copper is not useless - it has 8 new block types! "And that's all?" - yes, and that's geat! Absolutely essential for Steampunk builds and not only. Just look how often it's used by the builders like GoodTimesWithScar!
- "Useless" mobs add to the ambiance, and I think the more of them - the better. Bears, foxes, hedgehogs, ants, elks, anyone! Even if they have no use for surviving.

The only update I have issues with is Caves and Cliffs, but for the very different reason. I like the new mountains and caves, but hate the fact that it's so hard now to find a big flat area to build a town. It looks like I'm always playing in the "amlified" world, and I never liked it. I think there must be some settings where you can chose the "amplification" level of the world.

I kinda agree on the Elythra thing, because I liked watching youtubers like Grian build a metro in his Evo SMP, and now everyone is flying around.
About the content - there is not ONLY the overedited "mrbeasty" videos out there. As a Hermitcraft fan, I can say there's plenty of good MC content. Also with the new Youtube algorithm some smaller channel with more "simple" content are starting to get pushed.

I enjoyed listening, thanks for the effort! SMP's with a few tweaks are my favorite way to play. I'm playing on one now where elytra only work in the nether/end;
it really makes other transportation more useful.

Great video! It's nice to see someone have something new to add to the conversation about the current state of minecraft (also banger persona music 🙏)

I think the totem of undying is fine for hardcore. It's a difficult thing to get, and it's pretty rare. Dark forests are already kind of risky to traverse, the Forest Mansion is rare as is, and full of dangerous mobs, and the Totem of Undying only drops from the rarest and most dangerous mob in the Mansion. You also have to be actively holding it and it only saves you from death once.

While I understand any kind of circumventing actually dying in hardcore might feel cheap, there's so many caveats into actually getting a totem of undying that I feel like it's fine. I feel there is a new level of risk/reward that comes from the context of being in a hardcore world and wanting to get your hands on one that kind of makes it a fun side objective.

I think something quite telling in this discussion is the recent discussion of copper tools, and the loudest voices in the room talking about how useless it is, when in reality it slides into its purpose perfectly. Copper armor fits perfectly between stone and iron in a world post-cave update, where iron is substantially rarer, as the tools are a little bit faster and more durable than stone, while the armor existing at all is critical for making deep journeys into the underground survivable to find large clusters of iron in the first place.

I think people just aren't starting new worlds, and the ones that are aren't using the tools effectively

I’m not really the type of guy to type out a whole novel in the comments usually (in fact I don’t even often write comments), however, I found this video very inspiring. It resonates in many ways and shows me the things I have neglected. Small changes in the game that cause it to get harder - maybe it’s not such a bad thing. For example I heard that in 1.21 they should be completely changing the librarian trades. Most, including me, viewed it as a change that sucks (I felt like I was in an echo chamber), yet now I see that it may return the balance of the enchanting system. Mending is a specific part. Another point that stuck with me from the video is regarding the content. I really saw what you meant about the content becoming stale, and I’ve been seeing it voiced by separate people occasionally throughout the last few months especially. Though that was something I knew, this video caused me to see it in a sort of new light. One final thing is about the overall popularity of the game. I’ve heard recently somewhere (might have been a comment) that someone came up with a theory of the game operating in cycles. The last time it started dropping was around 2014 if I am correct and then it sprung back up after a bit. This seems to be happening right now, since I’ve even heard a large creator mention the popularity dropping. One thing that might help especially with pushing newer content is the way the YouTube algorithm works right now, showing videos that can have as low as 10 views. There are a lot of other very good points about game features and experiences in the comments, which I agree with and support. Overall this was a very enlightening video man, thanks for making it, I am really glad I found this.
