Another benefit of a guide is that you don't spend half the time arguing with your spouse about whether you are going the right direction! Priceless!

Just want to add that guided group tours are excellent for solo travellers as a way to meet people during your trip.

We've also learned that location can be worth paying for. Being able to walk through a neighborhood in the morning or evening often becomes one of the best memories of a trip.

I would add, eat well! 😊 You don’t need formal restaurants with gilded chandeliers etc. Just don’t skimp on the local delicacies.

I’ve discovered the benefit of staying near the main train station. Often a little out of the centre of town so a bit cheaper and less touristy, I can drag my suitcase to the hotel then I’m hands free and often the touristy bits are within 10 min walk/train/bus which gives me time to review maps/itineraries. Worked for Florence, Milan, Madrid etc.

Omg! The unbound merino prices are INSANE!! As an Australian, where most of the superfine Merino wool comes from, even top brands are about half that price. Unbound merino prices are like cashmere prices! Crazy and ridiculous

As a recent retiree, my things I NEVER cheap out on are a bit different. Time is no longer my problem, so I always bake in extra days so I don't have to squeeze everything into the least number of days (I never rush through sights and experiences). I have always travelled very light (never check bags), and I have my photography and computer gear- there are many tips on this which I have picked up, but in the end I NEVER cheap out on good luggage and bringing extra good cables and adapters. I also usually travel solo, and love wandering around. But I will pay to have a local show me the places that I would never have found on my own, or pay for that tour option I just can't do on my own (like places not near train stations, etc.). So I never cheap out when I need someone else to make my experiences better. Sounds like very good advice, great content!

AMEN on the experiences "splurge". Isn't the whole point of going other places is to see them, taste them, experience them? And you can find something anywhere for the age and interests of your traveling group! Curating the memories, it's huge!

Pass on the merino wool. Go for quick dry shirts from uniqlo, under armor, etc. They are light weight, wash/dry overnight, dont retain odor, dont wrinkle, and temp regulation at the fraction of the price of merino wool.

Same for underwear (32 degrees has nice boxer shorts for cheap), and quick dry pants from uniqlo

I think those are 3 good things to focus on. I might find a cheaper flight or with fewer points, but if it gets me there at midnight, I'm not going to take it. I travel lightly also and have never wished I had brought more, it's usually the opposite.
