The AI used some fairly old material for this video. When I did this job 15 years ago money was pretty gone from the ship we had cards and our wages were a direct deposit managed by the company. CRT TVs have been gone for 20 years now. The cabins are mostly the same size but decor has changed.

As a chief officer myself of 22 years, I'm currently really enjoying my cabin with seperate bedroom, dayroom and private wet room. On many vessels even 2nd officers/engineers get the same luxury. Only difference with the cabin of the captain and chief engineer is that their cabins are slightly larger as they have a larger office space in them in case they need to receive guests/officials in there. Also cash advances and cash to master are something that is dying out. Owners prefer not to have large amounts of cash on board as it is a target for theft and corruption (i.e. from officials). Getting money on board in cash usually also incurs a lot of agency cash handling fees and bank fees, which they would rather avoid. Vessels on our fleet typically have 2-5k in the safe in EURO and USD, no more than that. Cash advances are limited to the equivalent of 200 EURO a month, wages are paid into bank accounts.

Captains typically never get a full nights sleep. At least on submarines they didn’t. <br><br>During the week if we were just transiting, they would try to schedule it so the captain would only get 1-2 calls a night. <br><br>But during significant evolutions, he may get woken up every 90 minutes. So many things require the captain to be informed. <br><br>Even something as simple as switching charts when you reach the end of one. Gotta wake up the co to inform him. Contact within 10k yards? Wake him up. Weird detection we can’t classify and it’s closing? Wake him up. <br><br>It’s so bad that at certain points the XO takes over and stays in control so the captain can sleep without anyone calling him.
