  I was a little older and wiser when I joined after 9-11 in my mid 20s, caught on quicker than my 18-19 year-old peers. Didn&apos;t take me long to figure out that breakfast is the best meal of the day on a ship, because you can get made-to-order eggs. It&apos;s the only thing that isn&apos;t mass produced and doesn&apos;t come out bland. I served 4 years on the Big E, and was convinced there was a big chicken coop near the reactors, full of giant chickens, because we&apos;d frequently get these massive chicken breasts for dinner, all dry and bland, and I&apos;d drench them with Tobasco. When my department asked for volunteers to work nights, mine was the first hand to go up, because that turned breakfast into dinner for me, so I wasn&apos;t dragging myself out of my rack for it, and had plenty of time to load up on it. Plus, working nights avoids most of the brass and is a lot more chill — <i>most</i> of the time... until it isn&apos;t.

  My Dad was in WWII on the USS Colorado. He signed up right after the Pearl Harbor attack. He was a child of the Great Depression and picked cotton - he and his siblings never got enough to eat. He and his shipmates all said at reunions in their later years, that the first time they got to eat - really eat, and not go to bed hungry, was when they joined the US Navy and went to basic training. They said the food in the Navy was so good and there was so much of it. They talked about the different ice cream flavors - most had never tasted it until the Navy. &nbsp;He was so proud of his service in the war on the USS Colorado. The ship was next to the USS Missouri at the signing of the peace treaty. He could see Admiral Nimitz on deck. USS Colorado was also a Magic Carpet ship when the war ended. &nbsp;He loved the US Navy and the ocean his entire life and taught us kids to love the military too. He died at 93 years and we played Anchors Aweigh when we closed his coffin at the end of his service.

  My father was a chef on ships during WWII. This video gives me new respect for what he did. He retired from the Navy after 23 years. He had permanent hearing loss.

  My 92-year-old husband spent 22 years in the Navy as a LCPO aboard carriers in aircraft mechanics. &nbsp;If they&apos;d take him, he&apos;d re-enlist today. &nbsp;He has never gone a day without missing that life.

  I was onboard USS Constellation 80-83. I&apos;m no foodie but I thought The food was always good. They know that good food was, is and always will be a big morale booster. Heck - occasional steak and lobster tail when we were at sea. No complaints. The showers - different story.

  I spent two years on the USS Independence CV62 in the MARDET, and had various racks and no problems with the food. What they don’t tell you is there are no weekends, no holidays, every day is a work day while you’re at sea. The noise is constant when they are in flight ops, and they are flying constantly. It can get grueling after a while, especially if you’re in an area that’s hot like the Persian Gulf. It’s a challenge, so it’s not for everyone.

  Compared to what sailors had to endure in WWII, the current life of the sailor is almost luxury.
