Why Does Everyone Hate Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?

People hate it because the story/whispers thing is confusing, Aeriths death was ruined, Chadley, lots of cringe moments like Red XIII voice reveal, Gongaga and Cosmo Canyon traversal is a headache, uninteresting side quests, tower/checklist, padding/bloated, etc.

I was burnt out by Cosmo Canyon, I wish I just did the main storyline and Queens Blood. Overall to me it's an okay game, not good or great.

If a story is going to change from it's original iteration, it's going to be compared to it. Most of the people that don't like the story direction aren't unhappy solely because it changed, it's because the changes they've made are not in alignment with the themes of the original. It's silly disney fanfiction. If you like that, fine, but a lot of us don't.

I don't think it's hate, I think it's disappointment. This is a once and done deal and they said it themselves. There will never be another FF7 remake. So people naturally wanted the best of what it could have been. What we got was half baked 'open world' with even worse herding than an Ubisoft game, and really, really stretched out content with somehow less content than expected. In context, Remake and Rebirth combined still did not cover the whole Disc 1 content of FF7. The only saving grace this game has is combat.

FYI, those who had beaten Rebirth, can check out the PAX panel hosted 2 nights ago where the director officially confirmed the design of goals of the trilogy. In addition, the new battle features. Not a modern remaster of old game.

Rebirth just feels like a minigame simulator

Game was good but for a ff7 remake retelling it kinda was too confusing the ending and too mini games probably made some people hate it but i liked it overall still

Why most people HATE FFVII Rebirth (myself included) boils down to:
1) It's stretched out to it's limit. Every funny tidbit from the original became a damn minigame that sucks your soul to the point you wish to skip everything and run straight to the end
2) Combat is slow and boring. When you fight a boss, you're less curious about it's moveset and more annoyed that it will take another 10+ minutes to defeat it
3) Tone and themes were changed beyond recognition. Yeah, like you said, it's the same story, just like Gnomeo & Juliet is the same story as Shakespeare's classic, but the way they tell it and the purpose is completely different. A gigantic part of the fanbase loved FFVII for it's mature story about environmentalism and human greed, and all that was removed and replaced with a story about metacommentary and multiverses. I liked when Aerith and Sephiroth represented our misguided belief that the Earth would save itself or that science would save Earth for us respectively, I don't care about the goals of this Disney villain wearing Sephiroth's skin

I know that taste is subjective and I can accept most of what you said, but there is something that I can strongly disagree with you: the Remakes ARE a mockery of the original. It is clear that the OG has an anti-consumerism instance because it is over-consumption that led to the creation of Midgard and subsequently the wars that created Sephiroth. In the Remakes, consumerism is the norm: every single place you visit is a tourist attraction. It is incredibly how much they downplayed the sacrifices we do to sustain our way of living and instead opted to make even the conservationists at Cosmo Canyon seem like they're only there to grab money from hippies. I couldn't understand Avalanche's goals in the Remakes, because everything is fine in the outside world, you can go to a remote town in the middle of nowhere and sing some happy songs with a fat lady and be happy like everyone else, as the only real danger in the world is mako poisoning (so stay away from the springs, ok?)

I can understand how a younger player wouldn't see the glaring issues, because they don't have the complete experience that an older player would have. You could look at a modern road, and say "that's pretty good", but a roman would look at the same road and say "that's atrocious", because he lived through a time when the standard was higher

It's really very simple. The original FF7 had a very tight story, it communicated its core themes clearly and effectively.

Remake/Rebirth takes an excellent story, and tapes on a multiverse and new themes of defying destiny.

It's not that the new games are "too complicated" (we've all seen marvel movies, we all know how multiverses work), it's that a great story has become muddied by other themes.

Take any other incredible story - Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, anything you can think of, and staple a multiverse and themes of destiny onto it. It will make the overall product worse because you're muddying the waters. Like an uninvited guest these new themes keep popping up and ruining moments that were once used to communicate the old themes.

People keep defending this game saying it's the original creators working on it, but they're not the same people after 20 years and their outlook and goals have clearly changed in that time.
