Lich, CR 21, ultimate master of arcane secrets: ouch that cantrip hurt me

Rakshasa, CR 13, random tiger devil: I auto-succeed on all spell saving throws and can’t be hit by attack roll spells because fuck you

Finally someone else acknowledges how busted these things actually are. They are not a mid boss or subservient to a higher power, they run the societies your player characters are in.

Fun fact, 5.5 changed their restoration to be instant rather than take weeks, months, or years. Since they still have Plane Shift, a fight with a Rakshasa most likely means fighting the same one twice in a row.

There is a pdf called "The complete guide to Rakshasas". You can gat a TONE of stuff from here, including Rakshasas subspecies, they society, morality, religion a human-rakshasa offspring (it is its own thing, called Yaksha) and absolutely insane ideas for plots involving theme. It's 2e but you can just invent stats if needed

Fun fact: Eberron creator Keith Baker’s favorite monster is the Rakshasa. Read all Eberron lore with Rakshasa paranoia for the full effect.

I think that somewhere along the line there's Korean influence in the DND design because of the phrase "when tigers used to smoke".

The thing about Hanuman isn't that he's like Wukong, but moreso a proto-Wukong through cultural diffusion.

The Rakshasa vs. Lizard People thing is literally how it works in Eberron, the global shapeshifting Rakshasa conspiracy is opposed by the global shapeshifting dragon conspiracy

Humorous moment where we were dealing with what amounted to weretigers, but one of our players decided to metagame a bit too hard, and threw the group into a panic because he was certain we were actually dealing with rakshasas, and while multiple lycans can certainly be a trial, assuming that they are as smart, cunning, and powerful as rakshasa are made things take so much longer. Was also definitely spending time trying to see if their hands were reversed.😊

In my campaign we have this... nega merlin whose soul got split into a bunch of other guys that get reborn every era. They basically do a Highlander every time they kill eachother and absorb the other's soul to try become Him again. Well, one of these shards of nega merlin tricked a rakshasa into a pact wherein they have to host an inn that is safe for anyone who stays there forever, and the Rakshasa hates him so bad but can't do anything other than host people, serve brew, and have tons of cats.

The Last Cat's Inn.

The story I've heard is that the Standard Dictionary description became backwards-handed tigerman by way of an episode of Kolchak the Night Stalker that Gary saw in the '70s, which made them that because of what their costume department had on hand to work with.

In the next episode: Rakshasa Tiefling. For when you want to play something other than a Tabaxi, but still want to be fluffy.
