It’s hard to wrap your brain around when you don’t think that way.

They also get a kick out of confusing you / keeping you in cognitive dissonance about their true nature

I dated a dark triad and it took me a long time to understand that he enjoyed causing me emotional pain or distress. There were a lot of hot and cold games, name calling, a lot of gaslighting and pulling the rug out from me. The callousness was what I noticed first. Then I began to realize that he actually enjoyed causing me emotional or mental pain and distress. It is almost impossible to understand these kinds of individuals if you are an empathetic/pro-social person. The unpredictability and the cognitive dissonance I experienced was so destabilizing.
I finally went no-contact and it’s been a year and a half. I’m still not healed, but I’m actively working on healing.

This is helpful Darren. The problem is that sadism is hugely underestimated,

It is hard to believe such malevolence in people exists if you have not experienced it. Those are barbaric behaviors. It is evil to the max. Absolutely mind boggling.

Narcissists use you until they’ve mined everything they can or you get in their way then they’ll bury you alive. Then there’s the self righteous ones who are driven by the malicious vein running through their rock hard heart to try to ruin you without a bit of compassion.

When you stand up to them, they can start a smear campaign against you. That is one of the most damaging and difficult to stop.

Excellent video on a very under-explored topic.

What might be worth adding is what I’d call the “victim sadist.” When you criticize their cruel behavior, they have readymade deflections to try frame themselves being victimized for being called out. There’s an extra layer of cruelty in coercing someone to feel bad for them as they are enacting cruelty on that same person whom they’re beckoning for pity. Weaponizing people’s better nature against themselves.

I've been targeted by a sadist who assumed I'd be a good target because I was going through some personal challenges. I called him out on it & he exploded. Deployed all the shaming & smearing tactics in his book, threatening me with social exclusion. I stood my ground, told him I'm cutting him off & wished him well. He was so furious but has stayed away.
