  My uncle Francois was killed just outside Caen on his 21st birthday 30 Armoured Brigade workshop REME (Special) he is resting in The Military Cemetery in Bayeux. I'm going this year probably for the last time because of age etc...R.I.P. uncle Francis and all there such brave boys.

  My grandfather was a tank driver in the Canadian Military in WW2. He was a ammo runner for the British in N. Africa, then moved to a Canadian tank crew where he was made driver for the Italy campaign. He was then moved to a newly formed tank company for the invasion of Normandy and was severely wounded near Caen. He lost an eye, his left hand, his hearing and had 30+ shrapnel wounds allover his body. He owed his life to Infantry soldiers that were near by when his tank was hit and dragged him out of the tank under heavy fire before it exploded.

  My father joined the Blackwatch, 51st Highland Division at 16 (he lied and recruiters were not too worried), went into Normandy, aged 17, in the week after D-Day and fought in the battles for Caen for weeks. Unfortunately he died years ago soon after my 16th birthday and we never really had man-to-man talks about his wartime experiences other than &apos;it was bad, but it was also exciting&apos;.<br>RIP Dad, the older I get the more I realise what a hero you were.

  For the sake of completeness, it would have been good for the documentary to have covered Caen’s eventual capture later that summer.

  My late father arrived on Normandy later in June (53rd Welsh), by which time Caen had been expected to be in Allied hands. &nbsp;The fight for the city was his first taste of action. &nbsp;The destruction of Caen and the subsequent slaughter of Falaise made a deep and lasting ompressipn on him. &nbsp;Despite all the horrors of the Campaign, the three events that he mentioned most often in moments of melancholy were Hamburg, Falaise and Caen.

  The thing about this video that had me raising my eyebrows in surprise and respect is I can tell most of the footage is from that battle. Most videos use whatever they can find from the war to go with their story. So this is special.

  The casualty rate June - August in Normandy around Caen and Falaise, on the allied side, was greater than that on the first day of the Somme in 1916.

  Strange that this Battlefield doc is less than an hour when the length of the original Battlefield: Battle for Caen documentary is over 2 hours in total.

  I have all Battlefield episodes on DVD. They aren&apos;t not much available anymore. One of the best series on TV when it came out. Very few series are better than this. This is one of the best and my favorite in the series. Most of the British involvement after D-Day is not covered very much. This at least covers a very key battle in the battle for Normandy in which they played a significant role. The episodes about the war on the eastern front which were also excellent.
