  I visited Pegasus Bridge and the museum last week. The museum has numerous artefacts and mementoes donated by the troops who took the bridges. It was a masterpiece of planning and it made a huge impact on the success of D Day

  was there in the museum and saw the glider , a flying coffin. Brave men willing to sacrifice themselves for freedom of europe entered , what a generation.

  My Uncle was a Mosquito pilot with 605 Sqn, at 0010 hrs on the 6th June 1944, he was over the Merville Battery with two other Mossies attacking searchlights and AA guns. I have his logbooks and in it he describes the area being plastered by 100 Lancs, then the Glider Train comes in...he also says he saw signs of the landing strips, all done by 0039 hrs when he cleared the area....happy to send over copies of he logs if they are of interest..:)

  In "The Longest Day," a film about D-Day, Richard Todd portrayed Major John Howard, the commander of the British troops who captured Pegasus Bridge. Todd himself had participated in the actual D-Day landings, serving as a Lieutenant in the 7th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment. Another actor, Patrick Jordan, played the role of Lt. Richard Todd in the film, creating a unique situation where Todd, as Major Howard, interacted with a character portraying his younger self during the historical event

  My wife and I went to see Pegasus bridge.<br>About about 30ft away was an old boy staring up at the bridge deep in thought.<br>When he walked towards us I noticed he had a limp and a Parachute regiment tie on.<br>I remember saying to my wife “there’s someone who knows something about this place”<br>We then went into the cafe and just behind us came this old guy.<br>Suddenly the French lady came out and embraced him like an old friend then took him through to there private residence.<br>It was only then we saw his picture on the wall, it was Major Howard.

  The important part of this operation is missed. &nbsp; Howard practiced this operation endlessly, including real glider landings, &nbsp;so that it could go smoothly in reality. &nbsp; There is a superb book on this operation by Stephen Ambrose.

  Narrator says it was luck that the gliders landed precisely where they were supposed too. Never mind the actual fact it was pure skill and exceptional piloting skills &nbsp;that made it possible. It wasn’t luck ,they were aiming to land exactly where they did .

  I was an Army Pilot and back in 1994 i had the privilege &nbsp;to fly Major Howard and a number of his men back to the bridge by Helicopter &nbsp;he signed my Pilots Book It was a fantastic day lending close to where they landed and meeting all the Veterans at the bridge a real red letter day for the Army Air Corps

  I represented Lt Den Brotheridge on our 75 mile run from tarrant rushden to Pegasus bridge on the 75th anniversary of D-Day , laid a wreath on his grave🙏
