  IMO HMS Victoria is the terrifying one because people knew the manoeuvre was wrong and still carried it out. That says more about command culture than the collision itself. Filming old military sites for my channel has made me notice how often the real disaster starts long before anything physically breaks.

  Its crazy how many ships and how much life has been lost due to pure incompetence and pride preventing them from admitting that the decision they have made may be a poor decision

  It might be worth noting that Lady Tryon was hosting a party in their house at the time, and several attendees mentioned to her how nice it must be to have the Admiral home earlier than expected. Questioned further a number of guests said they had seen and passed him on the stairs in full ceremonial uniform. Lady Tryon apparently collapsed in tears; maybe she sensed (in accordance with Victorian beliefs) that he was dead and his spirit had returned for a final visit home.

  There&apos;s a lovely &quot;supernatural&quot; side story to HMS Victoria.<br>Apparently, at about the same time as the sinking, Lady Tryon was having an &quot;At Home&quot; in their Belgravia townhouse.<br>In front of the gathered guests, the figure of Admiral Tryon appeared, in full dress uniform, and walked wordlessly through the gathering, &nbsp;disappearing out through a doorway, never to be seen again.<br>Needless to say, Lady Tryon realised that something was seriously amiss...😬

  The Victoria was lost off Tripoli, Lebanon, not the more well-known Tripoli, Libya.

  I strongly feel it should be mentioned that about half a year before the disaster adm. Tryon literally told his officers: &nbsp;“When the literal obedience to any order, however given, would entail a collision with a friend, or endanger a ship, paramount orders direct that the danger is to be avoided, while the object of the order should be attained if possible.” &nbsp; <br>This is pretty much exactly about the situation that happened here , which kind of lends credit to the idea that maybe t he wanted to push his officers to think for themselves.

  I notice that ram bows seem to be a theme in these stories. I think it&apos;s safe to say that the real villains behind the scenes were the chuckleheads who thought sticking the things onto warships was a good idea.

  My dads in the RNZN and he had quite a few friends on the Manawanui, he said they all felt a bit embarassed and shocked in the aftermath. But they reportedly had quite the field day with their insurance claims if you know what I mean!
