  The portrayal of the bread scene is almost criminally bad. In that scene, Katniss's father has just died and her mother went catatonic as a result, leaving her and her sister to starve. Katniss went out to get food for them but couldn't find any, and collapsed in front of the bakery. Peeta saw her and went and burnt the bread on purpose so that the bakery couldn't sell it and would have to throw it out, despite knowing that it would earn him a beating from his mother. His mother did beat him and then made him throw out the bread, that's when he threw it to Katniss to help her instead. He couldn't go out in the rain to give her the bread because his mother might notice him coming back wet and know what he did, maybe preventing him from giving Katniss more food in the future. In the book, Katniss is very aware that Peeta deliberately gave her food and got a beating for it,  and that's she's indebted to him, and she hates it because being in the game means she might have to kill him if she wants to go home to her sister.

  In defence of Haymitch, he had to survive his own hunger games, the 50th anniversary so that year they doubled the tributes to 48. &nbsp;So he not only had to survive while 47 other people died, for the next 24 years afterwards he has had to train two tributes from District 12, all of whom died. So he&apos;s rude and standoffish and self medicates with alcohol to dull the pain and trauma so you kinda get it and makes him so much more understandable as a character.

  One of the things you realize the further you get in this series is that a lot of the people you think are the problem are also victims of the system. &nbsp;This is a system that makes the districts not trust each other. &nbsp;You watch other districts killing your kids you&apos;ll never want to work together to deal with the real problem. &nbsp;The career kids are just as much a part of that. &nbsp;They are districts with the power to bring down the capitol, but they&apos;re given a little more than the others. &nbsp;They are convinced that they are favored by the capitol. &nbsp;They have more comforts and security. &nbsp;But they don&apos;t have any freedom. &nbsp;The kids &nbsp;have had the humanity trained right out of them. &nbsp;Even in the capitol, most of the people there are also victims... willing victims, but victims. &nbsp;They are bombarded with propaganda. &nbsp;They are given Panem et Circenses (bread and circuses) to maintain control. &nbsp;But if anyone in the capitol steps out of line they will be dealt with extremely harshly. &nbsp;<br><br>Katniss and Rue working together altruistically undermined the system. &nbsp;Grieving for a child from another district woke a lot of people up. &nbsp;Thresh saving Katniss for Rue&apos;s sake did too. &nbsp;Defying the capitol with the berries gave them IDEAS. &nbsp;When you see kids in that situation protecting each other and undermining the system, you start to believe that you can too.

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eemSJYKXKPM&amp;t=3254">54:14</a> Is an interesting moment because as you said, you see the humanity in Cato break through. He&apos;s realizing the odds were never in his favour, despite all his training, and that the Capital really doesn&apos;t care about him. Even if he gets the riches and the glory, Cato has never really had any autonomy and his entire life built up to being a few days of entertainment for some rich people. It&apos;s almost a twist that he has any humanity at all, because he&apos;s acted so evil the entire movie, but then you get the heartbreaking revelation that he&apos;s just a kid in a horribly broken world.

  Catching Fire is even better than Hunger Games. You DEFINITELY need to see this through.

  The three fingered salute is a form of tribute to Katniss because everyone thinks that she has just volunteered to go to her own death to save her sister. Later that salute will come to have a much different meaning.

  The beard guy (Seneca crane) was locked in a room with the poison berries. &nbsp;Basically they forced his “suicide” since he was in charge of the games and allowed katniss to show him up.
