Here is your mandatory pork bun! 🫓
ALSO! If you haven't played this game, give it a shot. It still has an active player base and if it keeps getting attention, maybe, just maybe, we'll see the series revived one day. 🙏

The fact that Sleeping Dog's open world is so restrictive, but you never notice while playing, is testament to how good of an open world it is.

The fact that the sequel to Sleeping Dogs was cancelled is scandaleous. To date one of the best games out there.

I had no idea how closed off everything really was. It certainly did not take away from the experience. To me, the world felt quite large while playing and pretty fun to explore.

If Sleeping Dogs has a million fans, then I am one of them. If Sleeping Dogs has ten fans, then I am one of them. If Sleeping Dogs has only one fan then that is me. If Sleeping Dogs has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth. If the world is against Sleeping Dogs, then I am against the world.

Years ago, I asked my friend Jamie, who used to work for United Front about this, here's he said summarized into afew lines......

The tramways were part of the project when it was being published by Activision, the game had a broader and less focused scope during this time, as games in early development often do.
When Square Enix rescued it from the dead, they wanted it out of the door, so United Front had to tighten the scope of the game to focus on it's core themes - which was not to simulate a working metropolis, but to put you on the set of a Hong Kong action movie - so the functional tramways (and the associated problems of getting NPCs to use them, and remodeling the map to avoid the player being able to see all the culled areas of the map) were one of the many unnecessary things that had to go.

It's a fun detail that the tram's window breaks when it runs you over

The devs knew from the start they wouldn't have the resources to recreate HK island 1:1. But they wanted to stay as faithful as possible to the FEEL of Hong Kong. They traveled to Hong Kong and took hundreds of photos to capture the visual essence of the city. Everything on the map is placed there with purpose to give you this same feel - large residential towers, steep hills flowing with vegetation and intersected by roads and offramps, neon-lit facades littered with AC units, messy back alleys, temples, night markets, street food vendors, barges... All of the essential scenes of Hong Kong life are in this game. While the plot pulls homage to the classic HK action cinema, the actual map is a love letter to the city itself. The end result that they accomplished with such limited resources and technology (remember, the game came out in 2012) is spectacular, and is proof of what you can accomplish in videogames when you work with passion and an artistic vision, instead of chasing quarterly gains.

The Dev cycle for this game was insane, it was meant to be a true crime game

Sleeping Dogs is one of those games you want to go back and replay every few years. Along with Max Payne 3, Fallout New Vegas and most of the Mafia series.
