Tips from an Aussie in the tropics:
- this is a big one -- preferably stop the sun from hitting the windows and even the walls from outside (shade cloth works great), or alternately close curtains/drapes
- close doors to cool only the rooms you need (other rooms open tbe windows)
- circulate the air with fans
- clean the aircon filters every week, more if you have a dog or cat, and make sure the drain is draining well with water led to a garden or drain (don't make a big mouldy green problem)
- vent out the ceilings if you can (consider installing roof vents)
- don't overwork the system, because it will cost you a fortune - set the ac at 25c

Honestly a ceiling fan in you staircase and maybe another one downstairs would greatly help with distributing the cold air from the top, especially those that run in two modes (some Phillips models for example)

We had two Bosch 3000i units fitted in Apr 26 and we notice that when we set the bedroom unit to 23 Degrees C, the house will run at around 300 watts overnight.
We had a small 5kw solar install fitted 4 Aug and we can now run the air-con at night from the battery.
Modern air-con units are a game changer we have one for the front room and one for the bedroom at night. I have read somewhere that the best way for me to run the system, is to run the systems at the max during the daytime when the solar will run them for free. At night the unit will keep going using the battery.
In the winter the units will provide heat which they do seem to be very effective at doing. 👍

had two Samsung 6.8kW splits with two heads downstairs and three upstairs.... OMG best thing we ever did. Looking forward to seeing how well they do heating in the winter too though as think that may have a big impact on our gas consumption. Same as you when you walk in from outside the hallway is so much better just from the upstairs flowing down.

I got the standard Samsung for the living room , electrician said the wind free was really for the bedroom environment. Standard was £1250 fitted and windfree would have been£1400. Unit in living room but also cools the dining and kitchen to an extent.

Set the stairs unit swing mode to directly down to ensure cold air goes downstairs.

Cold air does eventually sink down. You are probably missing the distance.

I have one indoor unit that is directly opposite a double door between 2 rooms. I set swing mode to horizontal and cold air ends up about lower leg level at end of other room.

My wife is American and she has installed ceiling fans in our house. She was telling me that as American houses are designed for air con and heating using vents, the ceiling fans are bidirectional. In the winter they are used to raise the heat and in the summer they are used to push the cold air down.

Definitely two ceiling fans, one upstairs and one downstairs. Keep both in summer mode, pushing air down, and reverse in winter months. You don't want the downstairs fan in a different blade rotation than the upstairs one; they'll just fight with each other, and you won't actually be circulating the lower cold air. BUT, for your 3D hobby, why not 3D print an air deflector out of PETG (or ASA/ABS)? PETG handles temperature swings much better and is less brittle. Make it easy to remove, maybe with magnets, clips, or command strips. If you design it with multiple angles, then you can push air downstairs when you're down there and switch to an upstairs angle when upstairs. Try that; it's much cheaper than a ceiling fan install, and then maybe just add a ceiling fan downstairs, upstairs one won't be needed. Your problem is that the airflow isn't at a sufficient downward angle to cool the downstairs, and then the downstairs doesn't have any air circulation at all.

It’s a shame they stopped doing their Q9000 air con. It looked like a high end speaker so much nicer to have in your house.

Great video.
To stimulate air exchange between the two floors, use the Swing fan setting.
